Overview

North Yankton is a fictional, snow-covered Midwestern state in the HD Universe. In Grand Theft Auto V, the playable portion of the state is centred on the small town of Ludendorff, a rural settlement whose main road, cemetery, cash depot and surrounding farmland form the setting for two of the game’s most important story missions.

It is easy to describe North Yankton simply as “the place where the Prologue happens”, but that understates its scope. North Yankton is the state; Ludendorff is the town within it. The game presents only a limited section of the state, but that section includes the town itself, a rural approach along Cavalry Boulevard, the Bobcat Security Depot, a farm, railway infrastructure, the Ludendorff Church and Cemetery, and several background or decorative town businesses.

North Yankton is primarily a story location rather than an open-world region. In Story Mode, access is tied to Prologue, set in 2004, and Bury the Hatchet, set in 2013. The player cannot normally return there through the ordinary map after completing those missions. A later GTA Online Survival mode revisits part of Ludendorff, but it is a separate activity layout rather than a full restoration of the Story Mode region.
