About this guide

Scope: Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, with clearly labelled notes for GTA Online where the area differs. Spoiler warning: This guide discusses major Story Mode missions, the ending, gang affiliations and post-game changes.

Overview

Chamberlain Hills is a compact but important neighbourhood in southern Los Santos. It is the main territory of the Chamberlain Gangster Families, the home area of Franklin Clinton and Lamar Davis, and one of the places where the game most clearly connects Franklin’s early life with his attempt to leave gang work behind.

Although the district is not large, it should not be treated as only the area around the BJ Smith Recreational Center. Its recognised neighbourhood zone includes the Crystal Heights and All Swell housing projects, Forum Drive, the recreational centre, the Chamberlain Hills Shopping Plaza and residential streets running towards Strawberry, Davis and La Puerta. The district is bordered by Strawberry to the north, Davis to the east, and La Puerta to the south and west.

Overview and boundaries

Chamberlain Hills lies in southern Los Santos, west of Davis and south of Strawberry. The neighbourhood’s western and southern edges run towards La Puerta, while Strawberry forms the most important northern connection. The area is urban, densely built and dominated by low-income housing, small residential streets, open parking areas and public recreation facilities.

The district’s boundaries are best understood through the game’s neighbourhood zones and named-location references rather than through a single visible sign. The in-game zone data identifies Chamberlain Hills as the CHAMH area, with multiple zone entries covering the neighbourhood.

The northern border is particularly easy to misread. Chamberlain Mall is not part of Chamberlain Hills. It sits in Strawberry, separated from the Hills by a small alleyway, even though its name suggests otherwise. Its named occupants include Aguila Burrito, Checkout!, a Discount Store and Family Dental. Only the Discount Store is normally accessible as a shop.

Neighbouring areas

Davis is especially important because its gang territory overlaps with the social and criminal geography of Chamberlain Hills. Davis is heavily associated with the Ballas, although Families members can be found near the Chamberlain Hills border and along Carson Avenue.

District layout

Forum Drive housing projects

Forum Drive is the most recognisable residential strip in Chamberlain Hills. It passes through or alongside the neighbourhood’s housing-project environment and is associated with the Chamberlain Gangster Families.

The two principal apartment complexes here are Crystal Heights and All Swell. They sit next to one another and are visually similar, making them easy to treat as one complex when first exploring the area.

Crystal Heights is an apartment project with nine rooms, several of which are presented as rental units but are not available for purchase by the player. The complex is noted for its high concentration of Families members, particularly the Chamberlain set.

All Swell is an apartment-complex chain. The Chamberlain Hills branch is at 1802 Forum Drive and is next to Crystal Heights. Gang members commonly spawn around this branch, reinforcing the area’s role as CGF territory. The building is decorative rather than a normal player-purchasable Story Mode residence.

BJ Smith Recreational Center and Park

The BJ Smith Recreational Center and Park is on Carson Avenue and is the most useful landmark for navigation. It contains:

The centre is not merely decorative. It is used in Story Mode missions and later Online content. Franklin drives Lamar to the centre during Chop, and the basketball court becomes the site of a major confrontation in The Third Way, one of the possible final missions.

A vending machine at the recreational centre can be used to purchase a drink and restore health. The centre is one of the documented locations for interactive eCola or Sprunk vending machines.

Named directory: BJ Smith area

The centre is a good place to orient yourself because Carson Avenue, Forum Drive and nearby roads create several obvious approaches. It also provides a useful escape route during missions: the open park, courts and nearby lanes offer more movement options than the narrow residential blocks.

Chamberlain Hills Shopping Plaza

The neighbourhood contains a small shopping-plaza area referred to as Chamberlain Hills Shopping Plaza. It is primarily a background commercial location rather than a major gameplay hub. The district should not be expanded to include every business visible from the northern side of Strawberry Avenue, however. In particular, Chamberlain Mall is a separate Strawberry location.

The available location evidence identifies the plaza as a Chamberlain Hills point of interest, but does not establish a complete set of individually accessible shops within it. For that reason, storefront names should be treated cautiously unless they can be verified directly in the game or through a dedicated business source.

Named directory: commercial locations

The original GTA V neighbourhood page describes the district as having very limited business activity. In GTA Online, the formerly vacant commercial space associated with the area became connected with LD Organics after the 2021 update period. This is an Online-era change and should not be read as a Story Mode shop.

Roads and routes

The recognised roads and streets within or passing through Chamberlain Hills are:

These roads do not all behave identically. Some form the neighbourhood’s internal street network, while others mark its edges or provide through-routes into nearby districts.

Forum Drive

Forum Drive is the most important road for the housing projects. It is associated with Crystal Heights, All Swell and the Chamberlain Gangster Families. It also appears in mission and activity locations, including an Hao street race start and later Online delivery activity.

Carson Avenue

Carson Avenue runs through the recreational-centre side of the neighbourhood. It is the best road to use when heading for the BJ Smith Recreational Center, and it provides a practical connection towards Davis.

Strawberry Avenue

Strawberry Avenue is one of the most useful north-south routes. It passes near the border with Strawberry and provides access to the Chamberlain Mall area, although the mall itself is outside Chamberlain Hills.

Autopia Parkway and Innocence Boulevard

These roads help connect the district with the wider South Los Santos road network. They are useful when approaching from La Puerta, Strawberry or the central Los Santos highways, though the exact boundary between neighbourhood zones can be difficult to see while driving.

Residents, characters and factions

Franklin Clinton

Franklin is the best-known person associated with Chamberlain Hills. He is a former member of the Chamberlain Gangster Families and grew up in the same South Los Santos environment as Lamar Davis. His relationship with the neighbourhood is therefore more important than simply having a house there.

Franklin’s early story is built around a tension between familiarity and escape. He knows the local streets, gang sets and personalities, but he also wants to move beyond low-level street crime. His meetings with Michael De Santa gradually pull him into more ambitious criminal work, while his conflict with Lamar and Stretch shows the cost of trying to leave the old hierarchy behind.

Franklin’s Story Mode house is in Strawberry rather than inside Chamberlain Hills proper. This distinction matters when describing the area, even though Franklin’s early missions repeatedly bring the player into Chamberlain Hills and nearby South Los Santos.

Lamar Davis

Lamar is another major figure associated with the neighbourhood. He is Franklin’s friend, business partner and frequent source of trouble. Lamar’s schemes repeatedly draw Franklin back into street-level disputes involving the Families and Ballas.

Gerald

Gerald is listed as a notable resident associated with Chamberlain Hills. In GTA Online, his apartment and mission network are connected with South Los Santos, although not every mission ending or starting point is physically inside Chamberlain Hills.

The Families

The Families control Chamberlain Hills. The principal local set is the Chamberlain Gangster Families, commonly abbreviated to CGF. The set is also referred to as “The Hills” or “Killer Hills”. Its members are generally associated with green, black and white clothing, and gang members are commonly seen around Crystal Heights and the surrounding streets.

Named directory: factions and associated people

The listed CGF names should not all be interpreted as permanent free-roaming residents. Some are mission characters, some are identified through dialogue or data, and some may only appear under particular circumstances. Stretch’s association is especially important to the story, but he is not simply a normal post-game resident.

Enemies

The most important hostile factions connected to Chamberlain Hills are:

The CGF’s principal enemies are the Ballas and Los Santos Vagos. The Long Stretch makes the neighbourhood’s gang politics explicit, with Lamar and Stretch invoking Chamberlain Gangster Families identity during the confrontation with the Ballas.

The Families

Law enforcement and hazards

Chamberlain Hills has a reputation for high crime and a visible police presence. The district’s dense alleys, open doorways, housing blocks and small connecting streets can make foot escapes effective, but they can also make it easy to lose sight of pursuing enemies.

There is no evidence that the neighbourhood contains a unique permanent security checkpoint or a dedicated police station. Police activity should therefore be understood as ordinary LSPD response and mission scripting rather than as a special Chamberlain Hills facility.

---

The main hazards are

  1. 01
Gang hostility: Families members are common, and mission states can introduce Ballas or other hostile groups.
  2. 02
Police escalation: Gunfights in the open street can attract several police units, including helicopter support in high-profile situations.
  3. 03
Poor visibility around housing blocks: Cars, walls and parked vehicles can obscure enemies.
  4. 04
Mission-specific enemy waves: The number and position of hostile NPCs can change dramatically during scripted missions.
  5. 05
Border confusion: Driving across Forum Drive, Strawberry Avenue or Carson Avenue can move the player into Strawberry, Davis or La Puerta without an obvious visual transition.

Story Mode missions and activities

Chop

In Chop, Franklin drives Lamar to the BJ Smith Recreational Center after the search involving Chop and D. The centre is therefore tied to one of the earliest demonstrations of Franklin and Lamar’s unstable working relationship.

The mission is useful for learning the district because the player approaches the recreational centre as part of a normal character-driven sequence rather than an extended firefight. After the mission, the park remains available as a free-roam landmark.

The Long Stretch

The Long Stretch is the most significant mission associated with the neighbourhood’s gang identity. It begins with Franklin, Lamar and Stretch travelling to a meeting that becomes a Ballas ambush. The mission features a large firefight, a police response and a getaway sequence.

The mission’s objectives include buying a Pump Shotgun with a flashlight, attending the meeting at the recycling plant, escaping the ambush, losing the police and returning to Franklin’s house. The area’s gang politics are central to the mission, although the main shootout occurs at the recycling plant rather than across the whole neighbourhood.

Practical advice

The Third Way

In the The Third Way ending, Michael kills Stretch on the basketball court at the BJ Smith Recreational Center. The mission makes the recreational centre one of Chamberlain Hills’ most consequential Story Mode locations.

This event is progression-dependent. It is not present during the opening hours of the game, and it does not occur in the other two ending missions. The basketball court remains available afterwards, but the story’s state and character presence change.

Hao’s street race

The Hao street race associated with South Los Santos starts on Forum Drive in Chamberlain Hills. It is a two-lap sports-car race against Hao and four other drivers after Shift Work has been completed. The first win pays $200. If the race is later replayed by meeting the racers in the world rather than using mission replay, the entry fee is $100 and the reward is $450, although Hao does not participate in that version.

This is one of the clearest repeatable activities directly connected to Forum Drive.

---

The Long Stretch

  1. 01
Buy the Pump Shotgun and flashlight before entering the meeting.
  2. 02
Use cover inside the recycling plant rather than trying to rush the first room.
  3. 03
Prioritise enemies on raised positions and those approaching from side entrances.
  4. 04
Save ammunition for the final escape.
  5. 05
Use Franklin’s driving ability to break line of sight from the police.
  6. 06
Do not assume that returning to Franklin’s house means the mission is complete until the objective updates.

GTA Online differences

GTA Online uses Chamberlain Hills as part of the wider South Los Santos mission environment, but it does not reproduce Story Mode’s exact character progression.

In GTA Online, the district can therefore function as a mission backdrop, delivery destination or meeting location even when no Story Mode event is active.

---

Collectibles, items and services

Chamberlain Hills does not have a documented unique collectible set comparable to a special stunt-jump chain or a named letter-scrap cluster. The district’s useful fixed items and facilities are more modest.

Fixed or repeatable useful features

The vending machines are not a unique Chamberlain Hills reward, but they are useful during exploration and can provide a small health refill.

No player-purchasable Story Mode property is verified within the neighbourhood itself. All Swell and Crystal Heights are housing locations, but neither functions as a normal player residence.

Suggested exploration route

This route covers the district without accidentally treating Strawberry locations as part of Chamberlain Hills.

Exploration checklist

---

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Begin at Strawberry Avenue. Approach from the north and note the boundary around Chamberlain Mall. Keep the mall separate from the neighbourhood.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Turn towards Forum Drive. Explore the housing-project streets around Crystal Heights and All Swell. Expect Families NPCs and ordinary residential traffic.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Follow Forum Drive towards Carson Avenue. This gives a good sense of the district’s low-rise, high-density layout and its connection with Davis.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Visit the BJ Smith Recreational Center. Inspect the basketball court, baseball field, half-pipe, parking area and vending machine.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Continue along Carson Avenue. Use the road to understand the transition towards Davis and the eastern border.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Return through the internal streets. Look for gang members, parked vehicles, graffiti and open doorways. These details are more valuable for understanding the neighbourhood than searching for a large number of enterable interiors.

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Replay or revisit the Hao race start on Forum Drive. This is the best way to see how the area functions as a driving route rather than only a mission backdrop.

Lore, inspiration and trivia

Chamberlain Hills is widely understood as a fictionalised version of Baldwin Village, also known as “the Jungles”, in Los Angeles. The broader name appears to echo Baldwin Hills, while the neighbourhood’s development nickname “The Woods” reinforces the connection to Los Angeles gang-neighbourhood naming conventions. The nickname comes from leaked development data, not from spoken Story Mode dialogue, so it should not be treated as an ordinary in-game alias.

The name may also reference Wilt Chamberlain, the basketball player who played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1968 to 1973. This is a plausible naming reference rather than a confirmed in-game explanation.

The BJ Smith Recreational Center appears to be a series reference. Its name is associated with BJ Smith, a minor character from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, although the connection is not developed through a major GTA V storyline.
