About this guide

Scope: Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, with clearly labelled notes for GTA Online. This guide treats Chumash as the coastal town south of the Los Santos County line. North Chumash, including Hookies and the coast around Fort Zancudo, is a separate settlement and is not included unless specifically noted for comparison.

Overview

Chumash is a wealthy coastal town on the western edge of Los Santos County. It lies along the Great Ocean Highway, between the Pacific Ocean and the slopes of Banham Canyon, and is presented as a Malibu-inspired community of beach houses, designer shops, cafés and oceanfront property. The town is small in physical area but unusually dense in named businesses and decorative storefronts.

Its most important Story Mode role is in By the Book, where Michael De Santa and Dave Norton observe a party from the hills above the town while searching for Tahir Javan. Outside that mission, Chumash is useful as a highway stop, a source of weapons and clothing, a location for random events and a convenient western gateway between Los Santos and Blaine County.

Chumash should not be confused with North Chumash, the smaller coastal settlement farther north. North Chumash contains Hookies and is associated with different roads, random events and properties. It also lies near Fort Zancudo and Lago Zancudo, whereas the main Chumash settlement is centred on Chumash Plaza and the Historic Family Pier.

Included areas

The following locations are treated as part of the main Chumash scope:

North Chumash is especially important to keep separate. It has its own area identity and should not be counted as another Chumash subarea merely because the two settlements are connected by the same coastal highway.

Great Ocean Highway

Great Ocean Highway is the principal route through Chumash. In the game’s broader road naming, this coastal route is part of U.S. Route 1. It is the fastest way to reach the town from Los Santos and the most direct connection to North Chumash and the northern coast.

The highway is busy with civilian traffic and is useful for:

Police presence is noticeable on the highway. Some patrols and speed-trap-style placements occur around the town’s boundary signs. Crimes within the town may bring Los Santos Police Department responses, while incidents on the highway outside the settlement may involve the Los Santos County Sheriff’s Department. This distinction is most visible in ambient police behaviour rather than in a special Chumash law-enforcement facility.

Barbareno Road

Barbareno Road runs towards the coast and the pier. It is the most important local access road because it connects the highway to the Chumash Historic Family Pier and the adjacent residential area.

The bunker is beyond the north-west side of Barbareno Road, outside the ordinary Story Mode commercial centre.

Use Barbareno Road when

  1. 01
Approaching the pier from the highway
  2. 02
    Visiting the Barracuda Cafe area
  3. 03
Reaching the beach and pier parking area
  4. 04
Visiting the Chumash Bunker in GTA Online

Ineseno Road

Ineseno Road is one of the smaller named roads in the Chumash area. It serves the residential side of the settlement and helps distinguish Chumash from the uninterrupted highway frontage. It is less important for missions, but useful when exploring the houses and looking for local random-event triggers.

Chumash Plaza

Chumash Plaza is the town’s main shopping centre. It is a Spanish Revival-style commercial development with a large parking area facing Great Ocean Highway. The plaza is visually important because it gives Chumash a stronger commercial identity than its residential size might suggest.

An ATM is located outside GoPostal. Traffic can spawn in the parking area, and two black Burritos may appear at the far side of the plaza. A health pickup is located behind the shopping centre. The only clearly enterable Story Mode businesses in the plaza are Ammu-Nation and Sub Urban.

Chumash Plaza directory

Story Mode services: Ammu-Nation and Sub Urban.

Collectible or pickup note: A health pickup can be found behind the plaza. The exact availability of some pickups can vary by game mode, character state or respawn conditions, so it should not be treated as a permanent one-time collectible.

Chumash Historic Family Pier

The Chumash Historic Family Pier is the town’s defining landmark. It is reached from Barbareno Road and consists of a white-fenced boardwalk extending over the water. Pedestrians gather along the pier, and seagulls may appear on the railings and deck.

The Barracuda Cafe occupies the end of the pier. It is presented as a seafood restaurant and bar, but it is not a normal Story Mode restaurant interface. The pier is therefore chiefly an exploration landmark, scenic viewpoint and mission backdrop rather than a major service hub. It can also appear as a destination in Taxi Jobs.

Pier directory

The pier is inspired by Malibu Pier, while Chumash as a whole draws heavily on Malibu’s coastal architecture and road layout.

Residential Chumash

Most of Chumash consists of affluent detached houses, beach properties and landscaped plots. The homes are larger and better maintained than those found in many Blaine County settlements, reflecting the town’s wealthy image. Some properties have multiple parked vehicles, and several houses have distinctive decorative details such as boats, car-restoration equipment or beach furniture.

These houses are generally not purchasable or enterable. They matter mainly as:

Viewing Area

The elevated viewing area above the town is the most important mission-specific location. In By the Book, Michael and Dave Norton use a high position overlooking a house party. Michael uses a sniper rifle to identify Tahir Javan among the guests based on descriptions supplied by Mr K.

Outside the mission, the viewpoint is useful for observing the town, the beach and the highway. It is not a general-purpose sniper challenge or a separate facility.

---

Chumash contains an unusually large number of named businesses for a small coastal town. Many are storefronts intended to make the settlement feel occupied rather than fully simulated commercial premises. The following directory separates practical services from scenery.

Functional Story Mode services

Functional Story Mode services
NameDetails
Ammu-Nationfirearms, ammunition, armour and other weapons-related purchases
Sub Urbanclothing purchases
ATM at GoPostalfinancial interface available outside the plaza

Named but generally non-functional or decorative businesses

This list records named Chumash businesses found in the location directory, but a business name does not guarantee a usable interior or service. Chumash Plaza’s location page specifically identifies Ammu-Nation and Sub Urban as accessible in Story Mode, while the other shop names are primarily environmental detail.

GTA Online differences

GTA Online adds systems and activities that do not exist in the same form in Story Mode.

Chumash Bunker

The Chumash Bunker is a purchasable underground Bunker located beyond the north-west side of Barbareno Road. It is part of the Gunrunning business system and can be upgraded with facilities such as staff, equipment, security, living quarters and a shooting range. It is not a Story Mode property.

Its coastal position is popular because it provides relatively quick access to Los Santos while remaining near Blaine County. That is an Online logistics consideration, not a Story Mode mechanic.

Online activities connected with Chumash

Street Dealers are dynamic Online content. One documented location is behind Nelsons General Store at Chumash Plaza, associated with The Lost MC. Such content should not be treated as a permanent Story Mode encounter.

Notable residents and story-associated figures

The location directory identifies the following figures in connection with Chumash:

Tahir Javan is not a freely encountered resident in normal play. His connection to the town is mission-specific and ends with his assassination during By the Book. The resulting news reports describe him as an Azerbaijani-American philanthropist who was killed at a Chumash party.

Ordinary NPCs

The town’s dialogue and visual design emphasise affluence, coastal leisure and celebrity culture. During By the Book, Dave describes Chumash as a community of “beach hipsters”, and the mission uses the town’s fashionable image as part of the identification challenge.

Factions

There is no permanently dominant gang controlling Chumash in Story Mode. The area is mainly civilian and commercial. However:

About this guide

Major Story Mode spoilers

By the Book

By the Book is the central Chumash mission. After interrogating Ferdinand Kerimov, Trevor and the FIB obtain information about Tahir Javan. Michael and Dave Norton drive to Chumash and observe a party from an elevated position.

The player controls Michael while using the sniper rifle to inspect the guests. Trevor’s sections continue elsewhere, where the player receives additional clues about the target. Javan is identified through a combination of:

Michael then shoots the correct target. If the player identifies Javan early, the mission can be completed more quickly, although the game’s gold-medal requirements involve specific torture choices and keeping Kerimov alive.

Gold Medal considerations

The mission’s gold objectives are largely tied to Trevor’s interrogation sequence rather than navigation around Chumash. The relevant objectives include using particular torture methods in a required order and preventing Kerimov’s heart rate from reaching the failure threshold. The Chumash section itself is chiefly about accurate target identification.

Practical walkthrough

  1. 01
Begin By the Book after the FIB contact directs Michael or Trevor to the operation.
  2. 02
    Complete the opening warehouse sequence.
  3. 03
Drive Michael and Dave towards Chumash.
  4. 04
Leave the vehicle at the overlook and move to the observation point.
  5. 05
    Equip the sniper rifle.
  6. 06
Search the party carefully rather than firing at the first bearded or smoking guest.
  7. 07
Use the clues from Trevor’s interrogation to identify Javan.
  8. 08
Shoot Javan when the correct target is confirmed.
  9. 09
Continue Trevor’s section and take Ferdinand Kerimov to the airport.
  10. 10
Finish the mission and review the aftermath through news reports or radio coverage.

Taxi Jobs

The Chumash Historic Family Pier can appear as a possible taxi destination. This is not a unique Chumash mission, but it is a useful way to visit the pier while playing as a taxi driver.

Random events

Timm’s hitch lift

Timm’s random event is associated with the Chumash area. It involves picking him up and taking him to Los Santos International Airport. The event is time-sensitive and can reward the player with money or contribute to a driving-skill reward depending on the event’s outcome and the character used. The exact timing and reward details have varied in community documentation, so players should treat older claims about the event’s timer and payout with caution.

Shop robbery

A shop robbery can occur at Rob’s Liquor in Chumash. The robbery is located behind the houses on the east side of Great Ocean Highway. The player can pursue the robbers and recover the stolen money, following the standard Story Mode shop-robbery format.

Other events

Random events in the wider coastal region can be close to Chumash without being inside it. For example, events near Hookies and North Chumash belong to the separate northern settlement. Do not count those as Chumash events simply because they occur on the same highway.

---

Verified Story Mode pickups

The health pickup and crowbar are the most straightforward exploration items associated with the town. The LS Tags and Smoke on the Water entries require more careful interpretation because their availability may be connected to broader collectible systems or mode-specific content. They should not be confused with unique Chumash-only collectibles unless the game explicitly marks them as such.

Vehicles and environmental details

The following can be observed in or around Chumash:

Vehicle spawns are not guaranteed. They are ambient or semi-random rather than fixed collectibles.

---

Chumash has no police station or military installation within the town itself. The principal security risks come from the surrounding highway and from player-created incidents.

Environmental hazards

---

Chumash is one of the clearest real-world translations in GTA V. The town is based primarily on Malibu, California. The pier is a close fictional counterpart to Malibu Pier, while Chumash Plaza resembles a Pacific Coast Highway shopping centre in Malibu. The setting combines expensive coastal houses, designer retail, beach tourism and a small-town visual identity.

The name refers to the Chumash people, whose historical homelands included parts of California’s central and southern coast. The in-game motto, “Where the surf sounds loudly”, reinforces the coastal association and echoes the meaning attributed to the Chumash name for Malibu, Humaliwo.

The town’s social identity is deliberately satirical. It is marketed as a relaxed beach community, but the game presents it as wealthy, image-conscious and vulnerable to property anxiety, celebrity culture and fashionable affectations. By the Book uses this setting for dark contrast: an apparently peaceful beach party becomes the site of a politically motivated assassination.

Quick checklist

---

Is North Chumash part of Chumash?

No. North Chumash is a separate named settlement north of Chumash. It shares the same coastal highway but has its own businesses, random events and regional identity.

Can Chumash Plaza be entered?

Only some premises are functional in Story Mode. Ammu-Nation and Sub Urban are accessible. Most other named businesses are exterior scenery.

Can I buy a house in Chumash?

No Story Mode house in Chumash is available as a normal protagonist property. The residential buildings are mainly scenery and mission locations.

Can I buy the Chumash Bunker in Story Mode?

No. The Chumash Bunker is a GTA Online property associated with Gunrunning.

Where does By the Book happen?

The Chumash portion occurs at a house party observed from an elevated position above the town. The mission alternates between Michael’s sniper operation in Chumash and Trevor’s interrogation sequence elsewhere.

Is the Barracuda Cafe usable?

It is a named restaurant and bar at the end of the pier, but it does not function as a normal Story Mode dining venue.

Is there a unique Chumash collectible?

Chumash contains pickups and possible collectible-related locations, including a health pickup behind the plaza and a crowbar behind Hang Ten Surf Shop & Board Rental. It is not a standalone collectible set like the Letter Scraps or Spaceship Parts.

This guide is suitable as a researched location article, but several details remain dependent on community documentation rather than Rockstar’s own published location database:

The strongest fixed evidence concerns Chumash Plaza, the Historic Family Pier, the roads, By the Book, the Chumash Bunker’s Online location and the separation between Chumash and North Chumash.
