Key takeaways

  • The airfield is not part of Sandy Shores proper It lies south-west of the town, in the Grand Senora Desert, with Panorama Drive forming its main eastern boundary.
  • In Story Mode, Trevor gains practical control of the property during Nervous Ron It then functions as Trevor’s aircraft storage and delivery point.
  • The site contains three unmarked runways, a hangar, a helipad, a small control tower, Flywheels Garage and a Globe Oil station.
  • The hangar is useful but limited It can store one suitably small aircraft, while larger aircraft such as the Shamal and Luxor appear on the runway instead.
  • Sandy Shores Airfield is a major rural mission hub, appearing in The Merryweather Heist, Minor Turbulence, Caida Libre, The Bureau Raid, Monkey Business and a number of GTA Online heists and business activities.
  • The airfield is separate from McKenzie Field Hangar, the later GTA Online property introduced in the Enhanced version and associated with Oscar Guzman’s missions.

About this guide

Spoiler warning: This guide discusses Trevor’s takeover of the airfield, several story missions, aircraft storage, collectibles and later GTA Online activities.

Overview

Sandy Shores Airfield is a small private airfield in the Grand Senora Desert, south-west of Sandy Shores in Blaine County. In Grand Theft Auto V, it becomes Trevor Philips’ personal base of operations after the mission Nervous Ron. In Grand Theft Auto Online, it remains a useful rural landing site and mission location, but it is not normally a purchasable property.

This guide focuses primarily on Story Mode, with clearly marked notes for GTA Online where the location behaves differently.

Overview and boundaries

Sandy Shores Airfield is a compact aviation site positioned between several larger rural areas. It should not be treated as synonymous with Sandy Shores, the Alamo Sea or the entire desert around the town.

The airfield’s main entrance and signage are on Panorama Drive, on its eastern side. The railway line borders the northern side, while the Grand Senora Desert Oilfield lies to the west. An unnamed dirt route links the western and northern approaches to roads leading towards Joshua Road. Another rough route connects the area south-west towards Route 68 and Harmony.

Across Panorama Drive to the east is Senora National Park. South of the airfield is a raised area with a small shed, several recreational vehicles and a radio mast. These southern features are useful navigation landmarks but should be considered neighbouring scenery rather than part of the airfield’s operational compound.

The airfield itself consists of two broad parallel east-west runways and a smaller runway running roughly north-east to south-west. None has an official in-game number or name. The runways are long enough for most controllable aircraft, although very large aircraft are difficult or impractical to land there.

Nearby places that are not part of the airfield

The distinction matters because several nearby places may appear in the same mission or route, but they have different ownership, boundaries and gameplay functions.

Geography and navigation

The most reliable approach is from Panorama Drive, travelling south-west out of Sandy Shores. The road passes the airfield entrance and continues towards the desert. If approaching from the south, roads and dirt tracks from the Route 68 and Harmony area eventually lead towards the airfield’s western side.

The railway to the north is a useful orientation line. The oilfield’s industrial structures are visible on the western side, while the national park’s distinctive open terrain lies across the road to the east.

For aircraft operations, the two large parallel strips are the easiest to use. The smaller diagonal strip is useful for light aircraft, short approaches and visual orientation, but it is less forgiving when arriving at speed.

Facilities and named directory

The airfield contains fewer conventional businesses than a town, but its structures have several distinct functions.

Main hangar

In Story Mode, the hangar becomes Trevor’s aircraft storage facility after Nervous Ron. Aircraft obtained through legitimate purchases or brought into the hangar can be retained there, subject to the game’s storage rules.

The hangar can hold one aircraft of an appropriate size. A P-996 LAZER can be stored, but the hangar is not suitable for every large aircraft. The Shamal, Luxor and Luxor Deluxe are examples of aircraft that are too large for normal hangar storage and instead appear on the runway when selected.

Directory

Smaller hangar

A second, smaller structure stands near the principal hangar. It is visually distinct from Trevor’s main storage hangar and is associated with the Stunt Plane Time Trials in editions that include that content.

Entering the Mallard positioned in front of the smaller hangar can trigger the relevant time-trial activity in the Special and Collector’s Edition content and later enhanced versions.

Directory

Helipad

The helipad is located within the airfield compound. In Story Mode it is useful for Trevor’s helicopters. In GTA Online, helicopters may spawn here as the player progresses through the game, and Pegasus aircraft can be delivered nearby when the player is in the area.

Directory

Control tower

The control tower is a small, largely non-functional structure overlooking the field. It provides a strong visual landmark and appears in the airfield’s background layout, but it is not a conventional player-operated air-traffic-control facility.

Directory

Flywheels Garage

Flywheels Garage is located within the airfield complex. It is a named automotive business and visual landmark rather than a general-purpose player garage or aircraft-maintenance service.

Do not infer from the name that it provides every vehicle service available at Los Santos Customs. Its principal importance is environmental, contextual and mission-related.

Directory

Globe Oil

A Globe Oil-branded fuel-station building is also present at the airfield. It contributes to the site’s rural roadside-industrial character. The location should not be confused with a fully featured fuel service, since GTA V does not model aircraft refuelling as a conventional player service here.

Ownership and progression

At the beginning of GTA V, the airfield is associated with The Lost MC, who use the isolated site for criminal activity. Trevor’s takeover occurs during Nervous Ron, when he and Ron Jakowski attack the Lost and establish control of the property.

After the mission, the airfield becomes Trevor’s personal aviation base. The property is effectively unlocked for Trevor rather than bought through a normal property-purchase screen. Some property references describe it as being obtained automatically and for free after the mission.

Progression state summary

The airfield’s control is therefore not identical across modes. In Story Mode it has a clear ownership change. In GTA Online it is generally a neutral public location outside mission-specific encounters.

Residents, visitors and factions

Ordinary NPCs

The airfield is not consistently populated like Sandy Shores town. Depending on time, weather, mode and mission state, players may encounter:

Civilian aircraft activity is most notable in Story Mode. Aircraft such as the Cuban 800, Mammatus and Mallard may use the airfield, with the Cuban 800 reported as the most frequent of these aircraft. Landings are conditional and do not form a guaranteed, continuously running airport schedule.

Story Mode missions and activities

The airfield is important because it combines a safehouse-like property function with a recurring mission location.

Nervous Ron

This is the defining airfield mission. Trevor and Ron attack the Lost MC, sabotage their operations and establish the site as Trevor’s base.

The mission changes the airfield from a hostile criminal site into Trevor’s personal property. It also unlocks the practical storage and delivery functions associated with the hangar.

Why it matters

The Merryweather Heist

The airfield is used as a staging and preparation location for the Merryweather operation. Trevor, Michael and Franklin travel to the site before the heist’s chosen approach is carried out.

The airfield’s importance here is logistical. Its isolated runways and hangar make it a believable rural launch point for an operation involving heavy equipment and aircraft.

Minor Turbulence

Trevor takes off from Sandy Shores Airfield in a small aircraft during this mission. The location therefore serves as the start of a flight-based sequence rather than merely an optional place to visit.

Caida Libre

The airfield is referenced in connection with aircraft and emergency landing discussions. The older development name, Alamo Sea Airfield, is also associated with early mission dialogue and the game’s internal evolution of the location’s identity.

The Bureau Raid

The airfield can be involved in the preparation and wider movement associated with the mission, depending on the selected approach and the player’s progression. It is best understood as part of the game’s rural aviation network rather than assuming every approach uses the same airfield content.

Monkey Business

The airfield is listed among the locations connected with later Story Mode progress and Trevor’s aviation operations. Its role can be more functional than cinematic, particularly when the player is using Trevor’s storage and aircraft access.

Collectibles and fixed items

Letter Scrap

A Letter Scrap is located on top of a large, three-tiered rock south-west of the airfield. The player must climb the rock to reach it. It is not simply placed at ground level, so the approach is easier on foot or with a suitable off-road vehicle.

Acquisition steps

This is a fixed collectible, not a random event or a procedural placement.

Health Pack

A Health Pack is placed inside the main hangar. It is a fixed item associated with the airfield’s interior rather than a random drop.

Acquisition steps

The precise availability and respawn behaviour can vary by game state, so it should not be treated as a permanent, infinitely reusable medical facility.

Leave the airfield through the main entrance.
  2. 02
    Travel south-west into the desert.
  3. 03
Look for the large stepped rock formation.
  4. 04
Climb the rock using its natural ledges.

Search the interior along the wall and equipment areas.
  3. 03
Collect the Health Pack when available.

Aircraft, storage and spawning

Story Mode storage

Trevor’s hangar is the most important practical feature of the airfield. Aircraft bought through the relevant in-game stores can be delivered there, and aircraft brought into the hangar may be retained according to the game’s storage rules.

The hangar is not large enough for every aircraft. It is suitable for smaller aircraft and many helicopters, but large aircraft can be forced to spawn outside instead of being stored indoors.

Aircraft commonly associated with the airfield

Story Mode civilian aircraft

The exact model, colour and appearance can vary. Civilian aircraft activity is not equivalent to a guaranteed spawn table, and clear weather and time-of-day conditions matter.

GTA Online freemode or delivery aircraft

These aircraft may appear as freemode spawns, mission assets or Pegasus deliveries, depending on the player’s progression and the activity being played. They should not be interpreted as permanently parked, always available vehicles.

Aircraft storage cautions

The airfield is therefore an excellent rural launch point, but not a universal aircraft garage.

Note

GTA Online note

GTA Online differences

Sandy Shores Airfield remains accessible in GTA Online, but its role is more variable than in Story Mode.

The airfield is not the same property as the McKenzie Field Hangar and is not normally purchased as a player-owned hangar. It can instead act as:

Reported GTA Online activities involving the airfield include:

The aircraft, enemies and objectives depend on the specific activity. For example, one Air Freight Cargo setup may place a Mogul among the rocks between the runways, while another scenario may place a guarded Pyro inside the hangar. These are mission layouts, not permanent changes to the airfield.

The airfield’s lack of stable faction control in GTA Online is another important difference. Outside missions, it is generally a neutral public location rather than Trevor’s exclusive property.

---

Hazards and security

The airfield is open and exposed, with little cover across the runways. This makes it easy to navigate but dangerous during firefights.

Main hazards

During Nervous Ron, the Lost MC provide the principal resistance. In GTA Online, guards and hostile groups are determined by the mission. Players should not assume that clearing the airfield once makes it permanently safe.

Security advice

---

Security advice

  1. 01
Park away from the runway centreline before exploring on foot.
  2. 02
Use the hangar, control tower and parked vehicles as temporary cover.
  3. 03
Check the rocks and desert approaches when a mission objective says the site is defended.
  4. 04
Avoid bringing a fragile aircraft into a firefight unless the mission requires it.
  5. 05
In GTA Online, identify whether the aircraft or enemy group is mission-critical before destroying it.

Suggested exploration route

This route covers the principal fixed features without treating neighbouring areas as part of the airfield.

For aircraft testing, use the longer east-west runway first. It offers the most room for take-off and landing and is easier to identify from the control-tower side.

---

Suggested exploration route: steps

  1. 01
Start at the Panorama Drive entrance and inspect the airfield sign.
  2. 02
Follow the eastern edge towards the Globe Oil building and Flywheels Garage.
  3. 03
Walk towards the main hangar and check the Health Pack location.
  4. 04
Continue to the smaller hangar and inspect the Mallard or time-trial trigger area where applicable.
  5. 05
Visit the helipad and look across the two main runways.
  6. 06
Climb or approach the control tower for a full view of the site.
  7. 07
Drive around the western perimeter, taking care not to confuse the airfield with the oilfield.
  8. 08
Leave through the southern or south-western desert route.
  9. 09
Search the large stepped rock for the Letter Scrap.
  10. 10
Return via Panorama Drive or continue towards Route 68 and Harmony.

Lore, naming and real-world inspiration

The airfield reflects the decaying rural infrastructure of the Grand Senora Desert. It is too substantial to be a simple dirt landing strip, but too neglected and isolated to resemble a modern commercial airport. Its mixture of long runways, a tiny control tower, improvised buildings and criminal use fits Sandy Shores’ wider identity as a failed or abandoned resort community.

The site’s early development name was reportedly Alamo Sea Airfield, which survives in mission-related references. The finished game generally uses Sandy Shores Airfield, although news coverage and character dialogue sometimes use less formal descriptions such as “local airport”.

The layout is commonly compared with George Air Force Base in Victorville, California, and possibly Holtville Airport in California. These are inspirations for the setting and design, not in-game names or locations.

The airfield also recalls Verdant Meadows from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: both are desert airfields connected to a protagonist, both become important bases and both turn an isolated runway complex into a useful player facility. This is a thematic comparison rather than an explicit continuity link.
