Key takeaways
- Vinewood Hills is a large residential and natural district, not just the Vinewood Sign. It includes steep roads, expensive houses, Lake Vinewood, Galileo Park and several named estates.
- The area is most useful in Story Mode because it contains Franklin’s main high-end safehouse, unlocked after The Hotel Assassination.
- The most important fixed landmarks are the Vinewood Sign, Galileo Observatory, Lake Vinewood, Vinewood Bowl, Sisyphus Theater, Marlowe Vineyards and the Madrazo residences.
- The hills are excellent for sightseeing, letter scraps, spaceship parts, stunt driving and mission routes, but they are awkward for fast travel because of blind bends, steep gradients and narrow residential roads.
- Most ordinary businesses in the wider Vinewood district are outside Vinewood Hills proper. Do not assume that a shop or restaurant visible at the foot of the hills belongs to the neighbourhood.
- GTA Online adds properties, contact missions, heist activity and rotating events in the district, but its later updates do not change the basic Story Mode geography.
About this guide
Scope note: Vinewood Hills is treated here as the broad named neighbourhood and hill district north of Los Santos, not merely the streets surrounding the Vinewood Sign or Franklin’s house. Its edges overlap with nearby Vinewood, Richman, Galileo Park and the approaches to the Los Santos County countryside. Rockstar does not provide a single formal boundary line in the game, so the practical boundary used below follows the in-game neighbourhood label, road network and named locations associated with Vinewood Hills. The sign, Galileo Observatory, Lake Vinewood, Franklin’s safehouse, the Madrazo properties and the surrounding residential roads are all included. Nearby areas such as Vinewood, Richman and Tongva Hills are identified separately rather than silently absorbed into Vinewood Hills.

Vinewood Hills proper
The district’s roads and named locations are independently listed in the directory later in this guide.
Neighbouring Vinewood
Vinewood, including Downtown Vinewood and West Vinewood, lies mainly to the south and south-east. It is more urban, commercial and entertainment-focused. Roads such as Vinewood Boulevard connect the lowland entertainment district with the residential hills, but the two neighbourhoods should not be merged.
Richman and Richman Glen
Richman lies to the west and south-west. Its golf course, university-style buildings and wealthy streets can look similar to Vinewood Hills, but they are separate named areas. Richman Glen sits further west near the hills and contains its own facilities and countryside-style roads.
Tongva Hills
Tongva Hills is outside the Vinewood Hills district, generally west of the city and beyond the Richman area. It has its own vineyards, canyon roads and collectible locations. A route that leaves Vinewood Hills towards the west may quickly enter Tongva Hills, so check the neighbourhood label rather than relying on the visual appearance of the terrain.
Northern Los Santos County
Beyond the eastern and northern roads, the city opens into routes towards the Grand Senora Desert and Blaine County. Baytree Canyon Road and Senora Road are particularly important connectors. The countryside beyond these roads is not Vinewood Hills, even when the hills look continuous.
---
Vinewood Hills is built around ridges, ravines and a reservoir rather than a flat street plan. The southern section is heavily landscaped and developed, while the northern and higher sections contain more exposed earth, scrub and walking paths.
The hills are particularly attractive at sunset and at night, when the city lights are visible from Franklin’s house, the observatory and several public viewpoints. They are also one of the better places to practise off-road driving without leaving Los Santos, although a fast car can easily become difficult to control on the steeper bends.

Galileo Park and the Galileo Observatory
The Galileo Observatory is the district’s major public landmark and sits in Galileo Park, reached from East Galileo Avenue. It is a large Art Deco-style observatory with a prominent viewpoint and broad views over Los Santos. Its design is based on the real Griffith Observatory, while the in-game name refers to Galileo Galilei.
In Story Mode, the observatory is used in major missions including Dead Man Walking and Caida Libre. It also contains or supports several collectible and exploration opportunities:
The observatory grounds are usually more useful as a viewpoint and mission location than as a conventional interior. The game presents it as a tourist and scientific facility, but it is not a full free-roam museum with a large accessible interior.
Galileo Observatory directory
GTA Online: The observatory appears in contact work, heist preparation and later content, including the Doomsday Heist finale sequence and Diamond Casino-related activities. These are mode-specific uses and do not alter the Story Mode observatory.

Lake Vinewood and Lake Vinewood Estates
Lake Vinewood is a reservoir in the eastern part of the hills. It is bordered by roads, walls, houses and infrastructure, and is one of the district’s most useful orientation points. The lake’s dam and intake structures provide distinctive landmarks when approaching from the city or from the north.
The lake is not simply scenery. In Story Mode, it contains two nearby spaceship-part placements:
The surrounding Lake Vinewood Estates development is a cluster of high-value homes. Some of the houses are decorative or inaccessible, while others are used for visual storytelling, missions or property references. A replica of Franklin’s modern house can be seen among the surrounding residences, but it is not Franklin’s actual safehouse.

Mount Haan and the Vinewood Sign
The Vinewood Sign sits on Mount Haan and is the district’s defining landmark. It is the HD Universe equivalent of the Hollywood Sign and is presented as a restricted tourist attraction that hikers still visit. The sign has ladders and platforms behind the letters, graffiti and lighting equipment.
The sign is reachable on foot through hillside paths. Vehicles can approach some of the surrounding tracks, but the final route is better handled by climbing, using a dirt bike or approaching from a nearby path. The back of the sign is particularly useful for exploration and photography.
Story Mode content at the sign
The sign is not a shop, safehouse or conventional activity hub. It is a landmark with collectible and mission associations.
Vinewood Sign directory
GTA Online: The sign can appear in mission destinations, vehicle-cargo work and collectible activity. Online also uses the location for rotating or update-specific content, so exact encounters may differ by event and platform.

Residential ridges and wealthy estates
The western and central slopes contain the neighbourhood’s most recognisable residential roads. Most houses are decorative, but their placement establishes Vinewood Hills as an elite district rather than a generic hillside.
Not every mansion is enterable. Some are visual landmarks, some are used in missions and some are associated with later Online properties. The game’s exterior layout should not be read as evidence that every named building offers an interior, service or purchase option.
---
3671 Whispymound Drive becomes Franklin’s principal Story Mode safehouse after he completes The Hotel Assassination for Lester. Lester presents the house as an investment acquired through Franklin’s assassination work, moving Franklin away from Denise’s home.
The property can be entered by Franklin, Michael and Trevor in Story Mode, although Franklin has the most complete interaction set. It is one of the most useful exploration bases in the game because it combines a save point, vehicle storage, clothing access and a central hillside location.
Unlocking the house
The house is not missable in a normal Story Mode playthrough because The Hotel Assassination is required for main progression. However, assassination missions have separate stock-market considerations. Those investment opportunities are broader than Vinewood Hills and are not repeated here as if they were local property mechanics.
Safehouse directory
GTA Online: The same building is associated with Franklin and is known as The Clintons House after The Contract. The Online interior and household details differ from Story Mode, and players should not treat the Online version as an additional Story Mode safehouse.
---
The hills contain many named roads. Several are minor residential streets, but together they explain the district’s layout.
Unlocking the house: steps
- 01Progress through Franklin and Lester’s assassination storyline.
- 02Complete The Hotel Assassination.
- 03After the mission, Lester’s property arrangement triggers.
- 04Franklin receives 3671 Whispymound Drive as his new safehouse.
- 05Visit the house to access its facilities.
Residential and hillside roads
This directory follows the named-road list associated with Vinewood Hills, but road labels can appear close to district edges and should not be used as a substitute for the in-game neighbourhood display.
Suggested routes
Lake Vinewood collectibles
---
Vinewood Hills is mainly residential, but several important characters are tied to properties here.
City to Franklin’s house
- 01Leave central Vinewood heading north or north-west.
- 02Take the uphill route towards Hillcrest Avenue or the neighbouring residential roads.
- 03Follow the signs and map route to Whispymound Drive.
- 04Approach slowly, as the final road bends sharply near the safehouse.
City to Galileo Observatory
- 01Travel north from Vinewood.
- 02Continue towards Galileo Park and East Galileo Avenue.
- 03Use the observatory forecourt and viewpoint as the navigation landmark.
- 04For the roof collectible, climb onto the accessible roof area rather than searching the surrounding parkland.
Vinewood Sign exploration
- 01Drive towards Mount Haan and the sign’s lower access roads.
- 02Park before the steepest dirt paths.
- 03Continue on foot or with a suitable off-road motorcycle.
- 04Search the back and upper portions of the letters, especially the letter I for the Story Mode letter scrap.
- 05Leave by the same trail or descend towards the city-facing slopes.
Lake Vinewood collectibles
- 01Approach Lake Vinewood from the surrounding roads.
- 02Find the dam and intake tower.
- 03Search the waterline and underwater edge near the dam.
- 04Climb or swim towards the intake structure for the second nearby spaceship part.
- 05Use a boat or a helicopter only if necessary. The location is usually quicker on foot and underwater.
Residents and property-associated characters
These should not all be treated as permanent free-roam residents. Some are mission-associated, some are linked to a property but do not appear there continually, and some are relevant only in GTA Online.
Ordinary NPCs
The Vinewood Sign in particular can have hikers and tourists despite signs warning that the area is restricted. A police helicopter may appear around the sign during certain encounters, and attacking it can create a wanted level.

Story Mode missions
The Hotel Assassination
This is the most important progression event connected with Vinewood Hills because it unlocks Franklin’s new safehouse at 3671 Whispymound Drive. The mission itself is not primarily a Vinewood Hills mission, but its reward changes Franklin’s relationship with the district permanently.
Dead Man Walking
The Galileo Observatory is used in this Michael mission. Its elevated grounds and surrounding slopes create a distinct change from the urban locations used elsewhere in the mission.
Caida Libre
The observatory area is also part of the mission’s wider sequence. It is a good example of Vinewood Hills functioning as a transition zone between Los Santos roads and more open terrain.
Murder Mystery
For returning-player versions and later availability, Michael can investigate the Murder Mystery by locating four clues. One of the clues is at Galileo Observatory. The activity is associated with Michael and should not be presented as an always-available general mission for every save configuration.
Franklin’s later missions
Franklin’s house appears in later story missions and endings, including mission sequences involving Lamar and the final choice. These appearances are progression-dependent, and the exact use of the property changes according to the ending selected.
Collectibles
Letter scrap
A letter scrap is located on top of the I in the Vinewood Sign. This is a fixed Story Mode placement. It is not a random drop and does not move between normal playthroughs.
Spaceship parts
The Vinewood Hills area contains at least the following fixed spaceship-part placements:
The wider Spaceship Parts set contains 50 pieces across Los Santos and Blaine County, so only the placements inside or immediately associated with Vinewood Hills belong in this local guide.
For Sale Signs
The Josh Bernstein property-sign activity includes several signs in Vinewood Hills, including placements at Milton Road, Wild Oats Drive, Marlowe Drive, Hillcrest Avenue, Hangman Avenue, Ace Jones Drive and South Mo Milton Drive. Destroying all signs is required for the activity’s progression, but there is no separate reward for destroying the signs beyond completing the strand.
Because these are spread across several hills and streets, use a checklist rather than assuming that one visit to the Vinewood Sign has covered them.
Spaceship parts
| Location | Access |
|---|---|
| Lake Vinewood, underwater near the dam | Swim or dive |
| Lake Vinewood intake tower | Climb or reach the structure |
| Galileo Observatory roof, by the western dome | Reach the roof |
| Nearby sites outside the district | Check the map boundary carefully |
GTA Online activities
GTA Online uses Vinewood Hills for a wider range of repeatable content:
For example, the observatory is used in the Doomsday Scenario and appears in other Online work, while Vinewood Hills is associated with Martin Madrazo’s missions and the wider professional-criminal network.
Online properties should be separated from Story Mode safehouses. 3677 Whispymound Drive, for example, is an Online property and is not the same gameplay object as Franklin’s 3671 Whispymound Drive safehouse.
---
Vinewood Hills has fewer conventional player services than central Vinewood or Rockford Hills. Many apparent businesses are landmarks, private residences or decorative buildings.
Confirmed named businesses and facilities
The existence of a named venue does not guarantee an enterable interior, purchasable property or service menu. In particular, the observatory, sign, private estates and entertainment venues are best treated as mission, scenery or exploration locations unless the game explicitly provides an interaction.
Shops and everyday services
There is no major concentration of convenience stores, Ammu-Nation branches, clothing shops or vehicle customisation garages in the central hills. For routine purchases, descend towards Vinewood, Downtown Vinewood, Rockford Hills or another clearly labelled commercial neighbourhood.
This distinction matters because the hills contain expensive homes and branded scenery, but visual wealth is not the same as gameplay availability.
---
Vinewood Hills has no major permanent police station comparable to Mission Row Police Station or the Vespucci Police Station. Police presence is mainly reactive:
Do not confuse private security, mission enemies and ordinary police response. A mansion guarded during a mission is not necessarily a permanently hostile facility in free roam.
---
Traffic and terrain
The biggest everyday hazard is the road layout. Tight bends, sudden elevation changes and steep drop-offs make the area dangerous during pursuits. Cars can become airborne at crests, while motorcycles are vulnerable to small impacts near cliff edges.
Restricted sign area
Although hikers appear near the Vinewood Sign, the location is marked as restricted. The sign’s platforms are climbable, but unnecessary gunfire or attacks on aircraft can produce a wanted level.
Lake Vinewood
The reservoir is easy to underestimate. The dam and intake tower contain collectible locations, but diving without adequate breath or a clear route can waste time. Use the shoreline to orientate yourself before entering the water.
Private estates
Many roads lead to impressive houses with apparently accessible driveways. Some are open scenery, some are mission locations and some are safehouse or Online-property exteriors. Do not assume that a garage door, pool or mansion entrance can be used.
Franklin’s house details
Franklin’s house contains small interactive touches beyond its main safehouse functions, including Chop, the telescope, television, laptop, wardrobe, bed and health kits. These are fixed facilities rather than random loot.
---
For a thorough Story Mode visit, complete the following:
---
A sensible complete route begins at Franklin’s house. From Whispymound Drive, descend towards the central residential roads and continue to Lake Vinewood. Search the dam and intake tower before driving around the lake towards Galileo Park.
At the observatory, collect the roof spaceship part, inspect the viewpoint and check the surrounding paths. From there, travel north towards Mount Haan. Park below the final incline and climb to the Vinewood Sign. Search the letter I and inspect the rear of the letters.
Finish by descending through the residential roads towards Marlowe Drive and Lake Vinewood Estates. If you are completing the For Sale Signs activity, use the route as a framework but mark each sign separately. Several signs lie on different streets and cannot reliably be covered by a single pass.
---
Vinewood Hills draws heavily on Los Angeles’s Hollywood Hills. The Vinewood Sign mirrors the Hollywood Sign, including the idea of a famous hillside landmark associated with the entertainment industry. The Galileo Observatory is based on the Griffith Observatory, while its name invokes Galileo Galilei.
The broader Vinewood Hills concept has earlier series connections. In the HD Universe, it represents the wealthy hill country above Vinewood in much the same way that Mulholland represents an equivalent area in the 3D Universe. The names and exact layout are not interchangeable between continuities.

Is Franklin’s house in Vinewood or Vinewood Hills?
Franklin’s Story Mode house at 3671 Whispymound Drive is in Vinewood Hills. It should not be confused with the lower Vinewood neighbourhood.
Can I buy Franklin’s house?
Not in Story Mode. It is awarded to Franklin after The Hotel Assassination. GTA Online has a separate property at 3677 Whispymound Drive and later uses the Clinton residence differently.
Is the Galileo Observatory fully enterable?
It is primarily an exterior landmark, viewpoint and mission location. Its roof and surrounding grounds matter for collectibles and missions, but it is not a large freely explorable museum interior.
Is the Vinewood Sign inside the city?
Yes. It is in Vinewood Hills, on Mount Haan, north of Los Santos. The surrounding terrain feels rural, but it is still part of the Los Santos urban region.
Are Lake Vinewood and Tongva Hills the same area?
No. Lake Vinewood is associated with Vinewood Hills. Tongva Hills is a separate western area. Their landscapes are similar enough to cause confusion, especially when following collectible guides.
Does Vinewood Hills have an Ammu-Nation or a Los Santos Customs?
There is no major central branch of either service within the core hills. For confirmed services, travel down into a commercial district rather than relying on a nearby sign or decorative building.
What is the best vehicle for exploring?
A fast but controllable road car is suitable for the paved roads. A motorcycle or off-road vehicle is better for the Vinewood Sign trails and reservoir approaches. Helicopters are useful for surveying the area but less useful for precise collectible collection.
