Overview
Pillbox Hill is the commercial and financial heart of Los Santos. It occupies much of the western half of Downtown Los Santos and contains the city’s most concentrated group of skyscrapers, corporate headquarters, government offices, banks, transport facilities and major public buildings.
The district is easy to underestimate because it is usually treated as “the area around Maze Bank”. In practice, Pillbox Hill is much broader. Its boundaries include the Mile High Club construction site, Pillbox Hill Medical Center, the FIB and IAA headquarters, the Union Depository, the unfinished Pillbox North light-rail station, the Arcadius Business Center and a dense collection of street-level shops and decorative businesses.
It is one of the most important locations in Grand Theft Auto V’s story. Several major missions use its buildings or streets, including the FIB infiltration in The Bureau Raid, the corporate theft in Architect’s Plans, and the final heist at the Union Depository. It is also a useful free-roaming district because it contains a purchasable garage, an Ammu-Nation, a medical centre, public transport connections and numerous collectible locations.
Pillbox Hill is based primarily on Bunker Hill in Downtown Los Angeles, although its buildings and street layout combine references from several parts of central Los Angeles. The district’s name is also a play on the relationship between “pillbox” and “bunker”.
