Overview
Los Santos is the principal urban setting of Grand Theft Auto V. It is a fictionalised version of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, but it is not simply a one-to-one recreation. Rockstar compresses and rearranges real-world influences into a playable city with beaches, skyscrapers, industrial districts, gang-controlled streets, wealthy hills, an international airport, a port and a long coastal edge.
The city is part of the wider state of San Andreas. In GTA V, the urban area occupies the southern portion of the map, while Blaine County lies to the north. Los Santos itself is divided into roughly forty named districts and neighbourhoods, depending on whether small districts, industrial areas and special map regions are counted separately. The city’s boundaries are therefore best understood geographically rather than as one perfectly defined administrative polygon: the urban city runs from the northern Vinewood Hills and eastern industrial edge down to Los Santos International Airport, the Port of Los Santos and the southern coast.
Los Santos is also the part of the game world that changes most visibly according to the protagonists’ progression. Franklin begins in South Los Santos, Michael lives in Rockford Hills and Trevor initially operates from Blaine County. As the story develops, safehouses, businesses, heist sites and mission spaces connect the city’s very different social and economic zones.
