Key takeaways
- The camp is in Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness, reached from the dirt-road network around North Calafia Way and Mount Chiliad.
- It is primarily a Trevor-only Story Mode location Michael and Franklin cannot normally deliver victims to the cult.
- The camp’s major Story Mode activity is unlocked by delivering four eligible random-event victims.
- The shootout yields four briefcases worth $25,000 each, for a total of $100,000, alongside several weapons and supplies.
- Some victims are more valuable when rescued normally Sending Patrick McReary, Antonia Bottino, Ursula or Castro Lagano to the cult can cost the player later rewards or opportunities.
- GTA Online uses the camp for several missions and activities, but its presentation and hostile encounters do not follow the exact Story Mode progression.
About this guide
Scope: Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, with clearly labelled GTA Online differences. Spoilers: This guide discusses the Altruist Cult shootout, random-event outcomes, named potential victims and the camp’s story-state changes.
Overview
The Altruist Camp is the headquarters of the Altruist Cult, a hostile survivalist sect hidden in the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness in northern Blaine County. It is one of Grand Theft Auto V’s most memorable isolated locations, not because it hosts a conventional mission chain, but because it connects several apparently unrelated random events to a secret Trevor-only activity.
For most of the story, the camp is a fortified compound occupied by Altruists. Trevor Philips can bring certain random-event victims there instead of helping them reach their normal destinations. After four victims have been delivered, the cult turns on Trevor and attempts to sacrifice him. The resulting shootout opens the camp for exploration and provides a large cash reward, weapons, armour and health items.
The location should not be confused with the wider Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness, Mount Chiliad, Raton Canyon or North Calafia Way. Those are neighbouring or encompassing geographical areas. The Altruist Camp itself is the enclosed cult compound and its immediate access track.
The compound
The Altruist Camp is a small enclosed settlement built into the mountainous wilderness. Its boundary is defined less by an official administrative label than by the compound’s physical features:
The enclosed camp should be treated as the location proper. The nearby forests, ravines, mountain tracks and roads belong to the wider Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness or adjacent natural areas, not to the camp itself.
No separately named internal neighbourhoods, streets, shops or administrative subdistricts have been verified. Descriptions such as “bonfire area”, “watchtower”, “tents” and “dirt path” are useful physical labels, but they should not be treated as canonical district names.
Verified scope directory
Some secondary location guides describe the camp as having a watchtower, tents and a bonfire area. These are useful descriptions of visible features, but the game does not present them as a formal directory of named subareas.
Verified scope directory
Wider surrounding areas
The camp lies within the broad wilderness around Mount Chiliad. It is close to the road and trail system connecting the mountain, Raton Canyon and the northern shore of the Alamo Sea.
Nearby geographical areas
These areas should remain distinct. Raton Canyon is a large canyon and natural area, while North Calafia Way is a dirt road. Neither is a subdistrict of the camp. North Calafia Way runs between Mount Chiliad and the Alamo Sea in an unincorporated part of Blaine County.

Nearby geographical areas
Main ground route
The most practical approach is from the mountain roads around North Calafia Way. Follow the dirt tracks towards the base and western side of Mount Chiliad, then continue along the narrower trail leading to the compound.
A capable off-road vehicle is preferable. The route is uneven, steep in places and easy to overshoot if approached at speed. Motorcycles can reach the camp, although they are less stable on the roughest inclines. Trevor’s default vehicles and many ordinary cars can make the journey, but a heavier off-road vehicle is less likely to slide or become trapped.
A route through Raton Canyon and the associated dirt paths can also lead towards the camp. Stunt-jump route descriptions identify dirt roads in the Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness that continue towards the compound.
Approaching with a victim
When Trevor has an eligible passenger, the game marks the Altruist Camp as a possible destination. Follow the yellow route, but be prepared for the final section to leave the ordinary road network and climb onto a rough track.
When Trevor delivers a victim, the radio is disabled and an unsettling background track plays during the approach. This audiovisual change is one of the camp’s clearest signs that the player has entered a special state.
Practical advice
- 01Start with a reliable vehicle in good condition.
- 02Avoid reckless jumps while carrying a victim.
- 03Do not abandon the passenger or provoke the police.
- 04Approach the entrance slowly.
- 05Watch for the delivery prompt near the gate.
- 06If this is the fourth victim, expect the cult’s betrayal immediately.
Helicopter and unusual approaches
The camp can also be reached from above. Helicopters are useful for scouting the compound, bypassing the gate and observing the terrain, but they are not always reliable for determining whether the camp has been cleared.
After the Story Mode shootout, Altruists may still appear if the player approaches by helicopter, switches to a character within the area or enters during certain activities. This appears to be a spawning or state-management quirk rather than evidence that the camp has a second permanent population.
---
Front gate
The front gate is the obvious ground entrance and the point used for victim deliveries. It is normally closed or restricted to the player, although pursuing police officers and some NPCs can force their way through it.
The gate is also a useful defensive position during the shootout. From outside, the player can use the surrounding terrain for cover before entering. After the fighting begins, however, remaining in one place is dangerous because enemies can fire from several parts of the compound.
Guard or communications tower
The tower overlooks the entrance and contains useful supplies. The tower is one of the most important structures to check during and after the shootout.
The weapons and supplies can respawn, while the four cash briefcases connected with the shootout are the major one-time Story Mode reward. The tower also contains a Story Mode collectible placement associated with a Letter Scrap, making it worth visiting even when the camp is not being used for the shootout.
Verified items associated with the tower include
Cabins, shacks and huts
The camp’s buildings are rough, improvised structures rather than functional shops or residences that the player can purchase. Some have visible interiors or can be entered during the shootout, while others mainly provide cover and environmental detail.
The cabins reinforce the cult’s isolated, communal character. Smoke may continue to rise from some chimneys even after the main cult population has been eliminated. This does not prove that a complete permanent population remains, since later NPC appearances can result from respawn behaviour.
Central gathering area
The open centre of the camp is associated with the cult’s gatherings and the sacrifice sequence. During the fourth delivery, Trevor is taken into the compound and the Altruists attempt to use him as the next victim.
After the cutscene, the central area becomes part of the combat space. It is exposed, so use the cabins, walls and terrain rather than standing in the open.
Water mill
A water mill is one of the visible structures used to establish the camp’s remote, self-sufficient atmosphere. It is not a working business, service or purchasable facility.
---
The Altruist Cult
The Altruists are the camp’s controlling faction. They are hostile to outsiders and are especially hostile to Michael and Franklin. Trevor is initially tolerated because he supplies victims, but this relationship is purely transactional.
The cult’s ideology is presented through environmental details and dialogue. They advocate a primitive, anti-modern and cannibalistic way of life, treating outsiders as resources rather than as people. The camp’s isolation, rough structures and ritual behaviour support this theme.
Faction directory
The game does not provide a large roster of individually named Altruist residents. Most are generic hostile NPCs. The cult leader is important during the betrayal sequence, but is not presented as a conventional recruitable or repeatable character.
Ordinary camp population
Before the shootout, Altruists normally populate the compound and attack unauthorised players. Their standard weapons are limited, but their numbers and positions make the camp dangerous, especially when approached without cover.
After the shootout, the camp may look deserted when approached on foot or by car. However, Altruists can sometimes spawn again during helicopter approaches, taxi jobs, character switching or certain GTA Online activities. Their reappearance should be treated as a gameplay-state issue rather than as a fully documented post-clearing settlement.

Unlocking the Altruist Camp shootout
The camp’s main Story Mode event is triggered after Trevor has delivered four eligible victims.
The victims come from selected random events, not from ordinary pedestrians. Trevor must be the active protagonist, and the game must present the camp as a valid destination.
Not every possible victim is equally wise to sacrifice. Some characters provide more valuable rewards when rescued normally. The Getaway Driver event involving Patrick McReary is particularly important because Patrick can become a heist gunman. Other examples include Antonia Bottino, Ursula and Castro Lagano, each of whom has a useful later outcome if handled normally.
Potential victims and opportunity costs
The precise best combination depends on the player’s priorities. If the aim is to trigger the shootout while preserving useful characters, many players use lower-value options such as the drunk drivers and the Snatched victim. The important principle is to avoid sacrificing characters whose normal outcomes unlock cash, contacts, activities or heist assistance.
Potential victims and opportunity costs
| Random event or character | Altruist option | Why the normal outcome may be better |
|---|---|---|
| Drunk Driver 1 | Eligible | Usually a low-value sacrifice target |
| Drunk Driver 2 | Eligible, with two people | Can count as two victims |
| Hitch Lift 2 | Eligible | Normal outcome may provide a driving-related benefit |
| Hitch Lift 3 | Eligible | Delivery can interact awkwardly with event completion |
| Hitch Lift 4 | Eligible | Normal completion provides a driving benefit |
| Snatched victim | Eligible | Normal reward is limited, making this a common sacrifice choice |
| Escape Paparazzi | Eligible | Normal outcome may preserve the character |
| Domestic | Eligible | Castro Lagano can become a golf opponent |
| Burial | Eligible | Rescuing Antonia can lead to a later $60,000 payment |
| Getaway Driver | Eligible | Patrick McReary can become a valuable heist crew member |
The fourth delivery
On the fourth qualifying delivery, the cult’s behaviour changes. Trevor is taken inside the camp and the Altruists attempt to sacrifice him. A cutscene then leads into the shootout.
The event is not counted as one of the ordinary random events for 100% completion in exactly the same way as a standard encounter, although delivering a victim is associated with the Altruist Acolyte achievement or trophy.
Walkthrough

Walkthrough
- 01Select Trevor.
- 02Find an eligible random event.
- 03Complete the event far enough for the victim to become a passenger.
- 04Choose the Altruist Camp when the game offers the destination.
- 05Drive the passenger to the camp.
- 06Repeat until four victims have been delivered.
- 07During the fourth delivery, allow the betrayal sequence to begin.
- 08Take cover as soon as the cult opens fire.
- 09Clear the camp’s gunmen.
- 10Search the tower and the compound for weapons, armour, health and cash.
- 11Collect all four $25,000 briefcases.
- 12Leave by the dirt track or escape over the surrounding hills.
Cash briefcases
The shootout places four briefcases around the camp. Each contains $25,000, for a total of $100,000.
Search methodically rather than leaving immediately after the last enemy is killed. Check:
The cash briefcases are the principal fixed reward associated with the Story Mode event.
Weapons and supplies
The weapons and medical supplies can respawn, although timing and platform differences can affect exactly when they return. The camp can therefore serve as an informal source of weapons and RPG ammunition, particularly before all ammunition is freely available through Ammu-Nation.
The tower provides several useful items
| Item | Location or status |
|---|---|
| RPG | Tower supply |
| Assault Shotgun | Tower supply |
| Baseball Bat | Tower supply |
| Body Armor | Tower |
| Health Pack | Tower |
| Letter Scrap | Collectible placement associated with the camp tower |
Collectibles
The camp is associated with a Letter Scrap on the communications or radio tower. This is fixed world content rather than a random drop.
Collectible checklist
The available evidence confirms the tower placement, but it does not establish any additional collectible category unique to the camp. Do not count ordinary weapons, health items or briefcases as collectibles in the same sense.

Collectible checklist
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Letter Scrap | communications or radio tower |
Hostile defenders
The main danger is the Altruists’ immediate hostility. They are usually armed with pistols and similar firearms, but the compound’s enclosed layout creates several overlapping firing angles.
Respawning enemies
Altruists may respawn quickly in some circumstances. This is particularly relevant in GTA Online and in post-shootout Story Mode visits. A player who clears the compound and then enters a building or begins another activity may find hostile NPCs present again.
This behaviour is not the same as a formal gang territory system. The camp is not best understood as a permanent Gang Attack zone, even though it can remain dangerous.
Police
Police officers can interact with the gate differently from the player and may push through it during a pursuit. If the player has a wanted level, the camp is a poor place to make a stand because the terrain restricts escape routes and the compound offers limited safe cover.

Route A: First visit
This route is best for discovering the area without beginning the shootout.
Route A: First visit: steps
- 01Travel north from Sandy Shores towards the Mount Chiliad roads.
- 02Join North Calafia Way.
- 03Follow the dirt tracks towards the camp.
- 04Stop outside and observe the gate and tower.
- 05Circle the compound from a distance.
- 06Leave without provoking the Altruists if you are preserving the location for later.
Route B: Victim delivery
- 01Trigger an eligible random event as Trevor.
- 02Complete the encounter.
- 03Select the Altruist Camp destination.
- 04Use a robust vehicle.
- 05Take the final dirt climb slowly.
- 06Deliver the victim.
- 07After the fourth delivery, prepare for immediate combat.
Note
GTA Online note: The following content is separate from the Story Mode victim-delivery progression.
Route C: Post-shootout sweep
---
The Altruist Camp appears in GTA Online, but its function changes depending on the activity.
Route C: Post-shootout sweep: steps
- 01Approach with armour and a reliable weapon.
- 02Clear the entrance and tower.
- 03Search the tower for supplies.
- 04Check each hut and the central area.
- 05Collect the four briefcases.
- 06Pick up the Letter Scrap if it has not already been collected.
- 07Leave by the southern or western dirt paths.
- 08Return later to check for respawned weapons or NPCs.
Pickup Sticks
The camp is used in Pickup Sticks, where the player travels there to retrieve a package. This is mission-specific access and should not be interpreted as a permanent change to Story Mode progression.
Hostile Takeover
The camp can be selected as a location for a Hostile Takeover in the Executives and Other Criminals content. In this context, the player fights hostile occupants as part of a VIP activity.
Undisclosed Cargo
The camp also appears in the Diamond Casino & Resort-era Undisclosed Cargo Casino Work mission. The player is given a Tornado that must be delivered to the camp. This is mission-only content and does not reproduce the Story Mode sacrifice sequence.
Other Online uses
The camp can also be involved in later Online activities, including location-based resupply, stash-house and contact content. Hostile Altruists may respawn during or after these activities, so clearing them once does not guarantee a permanently empty compound.
Mode comparison
---
The Altruist Camp represents the Altruist Cult’s rejection of modern society. Its isolation is both geographical and ideological. The compound is difficult to reach, has no ordinary commercial infrastructure and relies on rough shelters, communal spaces and improvised defences.
Trevor’s relationship with the cult is deliberately cynical. He is not accepted as a true member. The Altruists tolerate him because he supplies victims, then immediately treat him as another source of flesh once he has delivered enough people. Their betrayal turns the camp from a destination into a trap.
The location also fits the game’s broader use of remote Blaine County spaces. Like the abandoned motel, hidden compounds and desert settlements, it uses physical distance to make the player feel that the ordinary rules of Los Santos no longer apply.

For a completion-focused save
---
Can Michael or Franklin use the camp?
They can visit the area, but the special victim-delivery mechanic is associated with Trevor. The cult’s relationship with Trevor is the basis of the Story Mode event.
Is the camp part of Mount Chiliad?
It is in the broader Mount Chiliad wilderness area, but it is not the same thing as Mount Chiliad itself. The camp is a separate enclosed compound within Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness.
Is Raton Canyon part of the camp?
No. Raton Canyon is a neighbouring natural area and a possible approach region. It should not be listed as an internal Altruist Camp subarea.
How much money does the shootout provide?
The four briefcases provide $25,000 each, for a total of $100,000. Victim-delivery payments are separate and normally total $1,000 per person, although the number of people counted can vary when an event involves more than one passenger.
Do the Altruists stay dead?
Not reliably. The main shootout changes the Story Mode state, but Altruists can appear again through respawn behaviour, unusual approaches and Online activities.
Is there a shop or business at the camp?
No verified functional shop, purchasable property or public service exists there. The structures are environmental and mission-related.
Can I trigger the shootout after completing all random events normally?
Usually not if every eligible victim has already been delivered to their normal destination. If the relevant encounters have been permanently completed, an earlier save may be required. Some random-event bugs and platform differences can complicate this, so the safest approach is to make a manual save before deciding how to handle the potential victims.
---
This guide distinguishes the verified compound from the wider Chiliad Mountain State Wilderness and does not treat neighbouring regions as internal camp districts. The game and available reference material do not provide a formal canonical list of every hut, cabin or unnamed camp prop. Consequently, the building directory uses functional descriptions rather than invented names.
The exact respawn conditions for Altruists after the shootout vary by platform, approach method, mission state and version. Sources consistently describe repeat appearances, but do not establish one universal trigger sequence for every release. Treat post-shootout population behaviour as an observed gameplay irregularity rather than a fixed story rule.
