Key takeaways

  • Mount Josiah is in Blaine County, directly north of Fort Zancudo and west of the Alamo Sea.
  • The mountain is a natural area, not a settlement Lago Zancudo, Fort Zancudo, Harmony and Great Chaparral should not be folded into Mount Josiah simply because they are nearby.
  • The principal confirmed Story Mode collectible on the mountain is Spaceship Part #41, located on a high ledge near the summit.
  • A peyote plant is reported on a path on Mount Josiah This is a Story Mode exploration item, not a permanent shop or facility.
  • The mountain provides views of the Alamo Sea, Fort Zancudo and the surrounding countryside. The in-game digital manual specifically presents the summit as a scenic viewpoint.
  • Fort Zancudo is a separate neighbouring location Its fences, gates, soldiers, wanted-level behaviour and military facilities should be documented under Fort Zancudo, not treated as Mount Josiah content.

About this guide

Scope: Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, with a short note on GTA Online where the differences are directly relevant. Status: Researched guide. The available evidence confirms Mount Josiah’s broad setting, principal neighbouring locations and several collectible placements, but does not support a complete catalogue of every minor random encounter, procedural Online job or decorative object that may appear on or around the mountain.

Overview

Mount Josiah is a rugged mountain in western Blaine County, San Andreas. It stands immediately north of Fort Zancudo, west of the Alamo Sea, and between the military base, Lago Zancudo and the rural settlements around Harmony and the Grand Senora Desert. It is smaller and less heavily developed than Mount Chiliad, but its position makes it useful as a natural landmark, a navigation aid and a high vantage point over the western side of the map.

Unlike Fort Zancudo, Mount Josiah is not a walled facility, town or commercial district. It is best understood as a natural outdoor area made up of steep slopes, exposed rock, dirt paths, scrubland and a few ledges. The mountain itself has little permanent development. Most of the significant named places associated with it are neighbouring locations rather than parts of the mountain proper.

Its most important Story Mode function is collectible hunting. A Spaceship Part is placed high on the mountain, while a peyote plant can be found on one of its paths. The mountain is also useful for escaping roads, reaching elevated viewpoints and approaching the western edge of Fort Zancudo, although entering the base remains a separate activity with its own military response.

Overview and boundaries

Mount Josiah occupies the mountainous ground immediately north of Fort Zancudo. It is part of the western Blaine County landscape, where the built-up roads around Los Santos give way to dry hills, military land, river channels and desert settlements.

The clearest boundary is practical rather than administrative. The mountain is the elevated natural landmass rising above the roads and lowlands north of Fort Zancudo. The military base sits at its southern foot, but the base is not part of Mount Josiah. The Zancudo River and Lago Zancudo lie to the west and south-west, while the Alamo Sea is farther east. Harmony and the Grand Senora Desert lie beyond the lower roads and flatter land to the north-east.

The name can therefore be used in two different ways:

For a location guide, the strict definition is preferable. It avoids incorrectly listing Fort Zancudo, the Zancudo River, Lago Zancudo or Harmony as subareas of Mount Josiah.

Geography and terrain

Mount Josiah is characterised by dry grass, exposed stone, scrub vegetation and uneven ground. Its slopes are generally more awkward to climb than they appear from a distance. A vehicle can manage some of the lower dirt tracks, but the upper areas quickly become too steep or rocky for ordinary cars.

The mountain is not designed as a developed hiking attraction. There are no confirmed visitor facilities, marked public trails, cable cars, lifts, houses or summit buildings. Exploration is based on free climbing, off-road driving and, where necessary, using an aircraft to reach a high ledge.

The landscape is useful for spotting several major landmarks:

The mountain’s height is significant enough to give a broad view, but it does not offer the large summit installations or cable-car infrastructure associated with Mount Chiliad.

Access and routes

From Fort Zancudo

The most recognisable approach begins near Fort Zancudo. A dirt route climbs into the mountain from the general area of the base. This is the route most commonly associated with reaching the lower and middle slopes.

Do not confuse access to Mount Josiah with access to Fort Zancudo. Entering the base can immediately attract military attention, while climbing the mountain outside the perimeter does not automatically create a wanted level. Staying on the mountain side of the fence is therefore the safer option when collecting items or scouting the terrain.

From Route 68 and Harmony

The northern and north-eastern approaches are reached from the roads around Harmony and Route 68. These routes are useful for bringing an off-road vehicle close to the mountain before continuing on foot.

This approach is usually more practical for general exploration because it avoids deliberately crossing military property. It also provides a straightforward route back towards Harmony, the Grand Senora Desert and the wider Blaine County road network.

From Lago Zancudo and the west

The western side is more broken and less convenient for ordinary cars. It connects visually and geographically with Lago Zancudo and the Zancudo River, but those places should remain separate in a directory or map guide.

By helicopter or aircraft

A helicopter is the most reliable way to reach the upper ledges. Several collectible guides specifically recommend aerial access for the Spaceship Part associated with Mount Josiah because the item is placed high on difficult rock terrain.

Recommended exploration route

  1. 01
Drive to the northern or north-eastern foot of Mount Josiah from Harmony or Route 68.
  2. 02
Leave the main road with an off-road vehicle.
  3. 03
Follow the lower dirt track towards the higher slopes.
  4. 04
Continue on foot when the vehicle begins sliding or cannot pass the rocks.
  5. 05
Search the upper ledges for Spaceship Part #41.
  6. 06
Descend towards the path areas to check for the peyote plant.
  7. 07
Return north towards Harmony rather than cutting through Fort Zancudo.
  8. 08
Use a helicopter for a second visit if the upper ledges prove difficult to reach.

Nearby connections

Mount Josiah is valuable as a navigation landmark because it sits between several very different parts of the map.

Fort Zancudo

Fort Zancudo is the most important neighbouring location. It is a large military installation with restricted access, soldiers, aircraft and military vehicles. Its presence affects how players approach Mount Josiah, but the base itself is a separate location.

The southern slopes of Mount Josiah overlook parts of the base. This makes the mountain a useful observation point, although it does not turn the player into a legitimate visitor or provide a safe route into the facility.

Lago Zancudo and the Zancudo River

These western and south-western areas form the lowland and water system around the mountain. They provide alternative visual references and routes, but they are not mountain subareas.

Harmony

Harmony is the nearest useful settlement for ordinary road access, vehicle changes and general resupply. The town lies away from the mountain rather than inside it. Any shops, garages or businesses credited to Harmony should not be listed as Mount Josiah facilities.

Great Chaparral and the Grand Senora Desert

The wider desert region connects Mount Josiah to Sandy Shores, Route 68 and the rural interior of Blaine County. The mountain is one of the western elevated landmarks in this broader landscape.

Residents, characters and ordinary NPCs

Mount Josiah has no confirmed permanent named resident, household or business owner. It is not presented as a village or staffed facility.

Ordinary activity is generally environmental rather than residential. Depending on location, time and game state, players may encounter pedestrians, motorists, hikers or other ambient NPCs on nearby roads and paths. These encounters should not be treated as a fixed population list unless tied to a specific mission or scripted event.

Businesses, shops and services

No confirmed functional shop, petrol station, medical centre, garage, restaurant or purchasable property is located on Mount Josiah itself.

The mountain may be close enough to Harmony or Fort Zancudo for players to use those places as practical reference points, but proximity does not create a service inside the mountain boundary.

Landmarks and structures

Mount Josiah is largely undeveloped. Its notable landmarks are natural rather than architectural.

Summit and high ledges

The upper rock ledges are the most important destination for collectors. One ledge contains the mountain’s confirmed Spaceship Part. The ledges also provide wide views across Blaine County and towards the Alamo Sea.

Dirt mountain path

A dirt path climbs part of the mountain and provides the most practical ground route. It is also associated with a reported peyote plant placement.

Fort Zancudo viewpoint

The southern-facing slopes offer views towards Fort Zancudo. This is a viewpoint and navigation feature, not a separate building or official lookout.

No summit buildings

There is no confirmed summit station, shrine, cabin, lookout tower, radio installation or visitor centre on Mount Josiah. Do not transfer Mount Chiliad structures to Mount Josiah.

Collectibles

Spaceship Part #41

A Spaceship Part is located on Mount Josiah near the top of the mountain, on a rocky ledge. Multiple guides describe the placement as difficult to reach and recommend a helicopter or careful climbing route.

The part belongs to the 50-piece Spaceship Parts collection associated with Omega’s Far Out Stranger and Freaks mission chain. The parts do not appear for collection before the relevant side mission has been initiated. Once the hunt is active, the player can generally collect the pieces with any protagonist, subject to the game’s normal free-roam access.

Collection steps

The collectible is fixed rather than random. Its position does not change between ordinary Story Mode visits.

Peyote plant

A peyote plant is reported on a path on Mount Josiah. Community location records place it by a bush along a mountain path.

Because the available evidence for the precise plant placement is community-sourced rather than a directly accessible official map entry, treat the location as a practical guide rather than a fully authoritative coordinate. The plant is a fixed Story Mode collectible once the relevant peyote content is available.

Peyote plants temporarily transform the player character into an animal and are separate from the Spaceship Parts collection. They should not be confused with random wildlife encounters or decorative plants.

  6. 06
Continue the remaining Spaceship Part hunt to complete Omega’s storyline.

Missions and activities

Mount Josiah is not known for having a large mission hub or a dedicated chain of missions set entirely on its slopes. Its importance comes mainly from exploration and collectibles.

Far Out

The Spaceship Part hunt begins after Franklin encounters Omega in the Far Out Stranger and Freaks mission. Mount Josiah is one of the collection locations in that wider hunt. The mountain visit is therefore progression-dependent, even though the terrain itself can be explored before the collectible becomes active.

Law enforcement and security

Mount Josiah itself is not a guarded military installation. The principal security danger comes from the adjacent Fort Zancudo.

If the player crosses into the base, steals military equipment or is detected by personnel, the response belongs to Fort Zancudo’s security system. A player can use the mountain as a vantage point, but the mountain does not neutralise the base’s wanted-level mechanics.

Hazards

Steep slopes and falls

The main physical danger is the terrain. Vehicles can roll down the hillside, while characters can lose footing on steep rock faces. The upper collectible ledges are particularly awkward to reach without an aircraft.

Vehicle limitations

Road cars are poorly suited to the upper mountain. Motorcycles may climb more easily but can be unstable on loose slopes. Off-road vehicles are the safest ground option, although even they cannot reach every ledge.

Military proximity

The mountain’s southern edge is close to Fort Zancudo. An apparently short descent can become a dangerous route if it crosses the base perimeter.

Wildlife and random encounters

Wildlife and ambient encounters may occur in the wider Blaine County countryside. These should be treated as random or environmental unless linked to a documented scripted event. No fixed Mount Josiah enemy group or boss is confirmed.

Story Mode and GTA Online differences

Mount Josiah appears in both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. The physical mountain remains a recognisable part of the shared map, but the surrounding activity differs.

Story Mode

Story Mode provides the clearest location-specific reasons to visit:

Collectible availability can depend on progression. In particular, the Spaceship Parts are tied to the Far Out mission strand rather than being immediately active from the beginning of the game.

GTA Online

GTA Online uses Mount Josiah as part of the open-world map and may place player-created, contact, business or update-related activities in the surrounding area. These jobs can change over the life of the service and may use the mountain, Fort Zancudo approaches or nearby rural roads without making them permanent Mount Josiah landmarks.

The Story Mode Spaceship Part and peyote plant should not automatically be assumed to function identically in Online.
