San Chianski Mountain Range

San Chianski Mountain Range is the rugged eastern mountain region of Blaine County in Grand Theft Auto V.

Importancemajor

Key takeaways

  • The range is larger than the Humane Labs area Its accepted span runs from Mount Gordo in the north to the RON Alternates Wind Farm in the south.
  • Its main named subareas are Mount Gordo, Cape Catfish, Chianski Passage and the southern range around Davis Quartz and the wind farm.
  • Monkey Business is the principal Story Mode mission associated with the area, taking the protagonists into Humane Labs and Research.
  • Davis Quartz is important for the Bail Bonds encounter involving Ralph Ostrowski and also hosts an off-road race.
  • Story Mode collectibles include a Spaceship Part at Cape Catfish, a second part in a coastal cave and a Hidden Package in the sea east of Humane Labs.
  • In Story Mode, entering Humane Labs outside its mission context triggers a severe police response. In GTA Online, the facility is not restricted in the same way.

About this guide

Scope: Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, with clearly labelled notes for Grand Theft Auto Online where the location behaves differently. Status: Research-based guide. The range’s broad boundaries and principal named subareas are well established, but Rockstar does not publish a complete official register of every minor prop, unnamed structure or procedural Online activity in the area. The directories below therefore list verified named locations rather than claiming that every decorative object has been catalogued.

Overview

The San Chianski Mountain Range is the long, sparsely settled chain of mountains running along the eastern coast of San Andreas. It is easy to mistake the range for little more than the slopes around Humane Labs and Research, but its proper scope is considerably broader. The region extends from the Mount Gordo area in the north to the RON Alternates Wind Farm in the south, with Cape Catfish, Chianski Passage, Davis Quartz and several coastal sites forming part of the wider area. It is bordered by the Grand Senora Desert to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east.

The range is one of the game’s most effective wilderness regions. It contains a major story mission location, a quarry used in a bounty mission, a remote coastal settlement, several collectible sites and some of the map’s strangest atmospheric details. At the same time, it has few services, limited paved access and long stretches where losing a vehicle can leave the player travelling on foot.

Overview and boundaries

San Chianski is best understood as a linear coastal mountain region, not as a single compact landmark. The mountains rise between the desert and the sea, with the road network following the contours of the eastern edge rather than providing a dense grid of routes. The area is visually divided into a northern, more settled section around Mount Gordo and Cape Catfish, a central section dominated by Chianski Passage and Humane Labs, and a southern section leading towards Davis Quartz and the RON Alternates Wind Farm.

The northern boundary is not a sharp administrative line. Mount Gordo is both a separate named landmark and the northern anchor of the range. Likewise, Cape Catfish is a distinct coastal locality within the wider mountain environment, rather than a synonym for the entire range. The same applies to Davis Quartz, which is its own quarry landmark at the southern end.

The range is also easy to confuse with neighbouring places:

The game’s internal zone data also identifies San Chianski Mountain Range as a named world zone, using the internal short identifier SANCHIA. This supports treating the range as a genuine in-game region rather than merely an informal description of the eastern mountains.

Named subareas and locations

Northern San Chianski

The northern part of the range is the most recognisable and the most useful for exploration. It contains Mount Gordo, Cape Catfish, the El Gordo Lighthouse and the coastal tracks leading towards Chianski Passage.

Mount Gordo is the high mountain mass at the northern end. Its slopes are mostly wilderness, but they contain a campsite, a grave and the location associated with Jolene Cranley-Evans’s ghost. The ghost is not a normal resident or random pedestrian. It is a scripted supernatural event associated with a specific location and time.

Cape Catfish is a small coastal settlement hidden behind the mountains. It has a jetty, a boat shed and scattered buildings, but it is not a full service town. Do not expect a garage, clothing shop, Ammu-Nation or other standard commercial facility merely because buildings are present.

The El Gordo Lighthouse stands offshore from the northern coast. It is a conspicuous navigation landmark and a useful reference point when approaching the mountain road from the north. The lighthouse is also tied to the Jolene Cranley-Evans ghost event, which appears on the mountainside across from the lighthouse after the appropriate in-game conditions are met.

Verified northern entries

The names Cape Catfish and Catfish View are sometimes used interchangeably by guides for the same general coastal area. They should not be treated as two separate towns. The boat shed, jetty and nearby beach are distinct physical features within that locality.

Chianski Passage and the central range

Chianski Passage is the main named road and pass through the mountain range. It connects the northern coastal settlements with the central and southern parts of the region. The road is especially important because it leads to Humane Labs and Research, the area’s most heavily scripted location.

Humane Labs and Research is a secure biotech facility situated in the mountains. In Story Mode it is the target of Monkey Business, in which Michael, Trevor and Franklin become involved in an FIB operation to steal a neurotoxin. The facility has laboratories, security infrastructure, service roads and a substantial coastal perimeter. Most of its interior importance comes from the mission rather than ordinary free-roam exploration.

Outside the mission, attempting to enter Humane Labs in Story Mode can produce an automatic four-star wanted level and an aggressive police response. The player should treat the site as a hostile restricted facility, not as a normal building that can be freely explored.

Verified central entries

Southern San Chianski

The southern range is more industrial and more exposed. It leads towards the Davis Quartz quarry and the RON Alternates Wind Farm, with the mountain terrain gradually giving way to infrastructure, service tracks and industrial access roads.

Davis Quartz is a large open quarry at the southern end of the range. It is not merely background scenery. Trevor visits the quarry while pursuing Ralph Ostrowski for Maude Eccles during the Bail Bonds strand. The quarry also hosts an off-road race, making it one of the more mechanically useful locations in the region.

The RON Alternates Wind Farm forms the southern landmark commonly used to describe the range’s endpoint. It is a separate industrial-energy site rather than a natural subarea of the mountains, but its roads, turbines and surrounding slopes are closely associated with the southern San Chianski landscape.

Verified southern entries

The range’s exact southern administrative treatment varies between map guides. For practical exploration, use the road and terrain transition near the wind farm as the southern limit, while keeping Palmer-Taylor Power Station and the Tataviam Mountains as neighbouring areas unless a specific activity identifies them separately.

Northern San Chianski

Access and routes

San Chianski has fewer roads than most comparable regions. The main approach is from the west, using roads through Grapeseed and the Grand Senora Desert before turning east towards the mountains. A second approach comes from the north through the Mount Gordo and Cape Catfish side of the coast.

Main route through Chianski Passage

The road becomes more isolated as it approaches the remote coastal sections. According to location references and player-facing descriptions, the range has very limited civilisation and only a small number of practical roads. Once the road surface turns to dirt, ambient civilian traffic becomes noticeably less dependable.

A fast sports car is a poor choice for a first visit. It is easy to overshoot bends, become stuck on unpaved tracks or lose access to the vehicle after a fall.

Suggested exploration route

For a complete Story Mode tour, begin at the north and work south:

This route avoids repeatedly crossing the range and combines the principal named locations with the known Story Mode collectible sites.

Main route through Chianski Passage: The most reliable overland route is

  1. 01
Travel east from the Grapeseed or Grand Senora side.
  2. 02
Follow the road towards Mount Gordo and the eastern coast.
  3. 03
Continue past the lighthouse and northern coastal turn-offs.
  4. 04
Follow the road south through Chianski Passage.
  5. 05
Take the relevant branch for Humane Labs, Davis Quartz or the wind farm.

Suggested exploration route

  1. 01
Start at Cape Catfish and inspect the jetty, beach and boat shed.
  2. 02
    Visit El Gordo Lighthouse.
  3. 03
Climb Mount Gordo and inspect the campsite and summit grave.
  4. 04
Follow the road south into Chianski Passage.
  5. 05
Visit the exterior of Humane Labs and Research.
  6. 06
Search the sea east of Humane Labs if collecting underwater items.
  7. 07
    Continue south to Davis Quartz.
  8. 08
Finish at the RON Alternates Wind Farm and inspect the coastal cave nearby.

Residents, visitors and factions

San Chianski is not a populated settlement in the same way as Sandy Shores or Grapeseed.

Residents

The range has no major permanent protagonist residence and no conventional town-based resident roster. Cape Catfish contains background inhabitants and environmental signs of rural coastal life, but the area should not be treated as a character hub.

The most prominent named figures associated with the region are visitors or mission participants:

Michael, Franklin and Trevor visit Humane Labs during Monkey Business. Ralph Ostrowski is found at Davis Quartz during the Bail Bonds activity. Jolene Cranley-Evans appears as a ghost at Mount Gordo under specific conditions. These characters do not establish that the region is their home.

Factions and security

The principal organised presence is the security and law-enforcement apparatus surrounding Humane Labs. In Story Mode, the facility is protected and treated as a restricted site. The FIB and associated agents are connected to the Monkey Business operation, while police respond to unauthorised entry.

There is no evidence that the range has a permanent gang-controlled district comparable to Los Santos. Random encounters, wildlife and occasional NPC traffic should be kept separate from a formal faction presence.

Residents

Missions and activities

Monkey Business

Monkey Business is the defining Story Mode mission in the area. It begins at Cape Catfish, moves to Humane Labs and Research, and then continues through the Sandy Shores Airfield and La Fuente Blanca areas. The mission’s objective is to steal a neurotoxin from the laboratory. All three protagonists are involved, although the mission divides their roles between the coastal infiltration, transport and laboratory assault.

The laboratory approach is built around the coast. Michael, Steve Haines and Dave Norton use scuba equipment and enter through an underwater access route, while Trevor and Franklin handle transport and support. This is mission-only progression content. It should not be confused with a normal free-roam entrance route.

Mission requirements and progression

Bail Bonds: Ralph Ostrowski

Davis Quartz is the location where Trevor can find Ralph Ostrowski during Maude Eccles’s Bail Bonds missions. The quarry’s terraces and industrial equipment provide the encounter’s setting. The target can be captured and returned to Maude or dealt with in another way, depending on the player’s approach.

Because this is a bounty encounter rather than a permanent mission hub, the quarry does not remain populated with a dedicated quest-giver after the event. Davis Quartz remains available as an exploration and race location.

Off-road race

Davis Quartz also hosts an off-road race. This is a recreational activity rather than a story mission. The quarry’s open terraces and uneven ground make it a natural setting for off-road vehicles.

The exact availability of races can depend on the relevant activity unlocks and protagonist requirements. If the marker is absent, check whether the character and progress state are suitable rather than assuming the quarry is inactive.

Collectibles and useful items

Spaceship Parts

At least two Story Mode Spaceship Parts are associated with the broad San Chianski area.

Cape Catfish boat shed

One part is inside the shed at Cape Catfish, near the boat and jetty. Guides describe the structure as a boathouse or boat shed and place the part on the floor inside. The area is easy to overlook because the shed appears to be scenery rather than a conventional collectible building.

Acquisition steps

The part becomes available as part of the Spaceship Parts activity after beginning Far Out for Omega as Franklin. Collecting all 50 parts completes the activity chain and contributes to the wider completion requirements.

Coastal cave near the southern range

Another part is placed in an underwater coastal cave near the southern end of the range, in the direction of the wind farm. It requires entering the water and diving into the cave. The exact naming differs between guides, which may call it the San Chianski Mountain Cave, coastal cave or a cave near the RON Alternates Wind Farm.

Acquisition steps

This is distinct from the Cape Catfish part. Do not mark the cave location complete merely because the northern shed has been searched.

Hidden Package

A Story Mode Hidden Package is located underwater east of Humane Labs and Research. It is associated with wreckage, including a sunken truck and nearby tank-like debris, and contains $10,000 according to collectible guides.

Acquisition steps

This is a fixed Story Mode placement, not a random chest. Do not confuse it with GTA Online Shipwrecks, which are a separate rotating activity.

GTA Online Shipwrecks

GTA Online later introduced rotating Shipwreck locations and daily reward systems. The eastern San Chianski coast has appeared in those location lists, including sites around Cape Catfish and south-east of Humane Labs. These are not part of the original Story Mode Hidden Package directory. Their availability, reward and exact daily position depend on the Online activity rather than on the single-player map.

Cape Catfish boat shed

  1. 01
    Travel to Cape Catfish.
  2. 02
Follow the road down towards the water.
  3. 03
Locate the boat shed beside the jetty and boat.
  4. 04
Enter the shed and collect the glowing Spaceship Part.

Coastal cave near the southern range

  1. 01
Approach the coast near the southern end of the range.
  2. 02
Locate the cave entrance and nearby watercraft or coastal markers.
  3. 03
Enter the water with scuba equipment or a suitable submersible.
  4. 04
Dive into the cave and collect the part from the submerged area.

Hidden Package

  1. 01
Approach the coast east of Humane Labs.
  2. 02
Use a boat, submersible or scuba equipment.
  3. 03
Search the seabed around the wreckage.
  4. 04
Check the rear of the sunken truck.

Mount Gordo ghost and other secrets

Jolene Cranley-Evans

The ghost of Jolene Cranley-Evans appears on Mount Gordo after 23:00 in-game, on the mountainside facing the lighthouse. The event is associated with the death of Jolene and her husband Jock Cranley. The ghost is a scripted appearance, not a random encounter and not an ordinary NPC.

The event is atmospheric and does not begin a conventional mission chain.

Summit grave

A cross and grave stand at the top of the northernmost Mount Gordo peak. The identity of the person buried there is not established in the game. Treat theories about the grave as speculation rather than canon.

Underwater hatch

An underwater hatch can be seen in the sea near the San Chianski coast. It is widely understood as a reference to the television series Lost. The hatch is an environmental Easter egg, not a functional Story Mode entrance, mission trigger or collectible reward.

Wildlife and hazards

There is no verified basis for treating rumours such as the Goatman or FIB campsite stories as standard canonical encounters. They belong to fan myth and speculation rather than confirmed location mechanics.

Jolene Cranley-Evans: Practical advice

  1. 01
Reach the Mount Gordo campsite before night.
  2. 02
Climb to the viewpoint facing the lighthouse.
  3. 03
    Wait until the late-night window.
  4. 04
Use a long-range view or camera to observe the apparition from a safe distance.

Story Mode and GTA Online differences

The most important distinction is Humane Labs. A player following a Story Mode guide should not expect the same wanted-level behaviour in Online, and an Online player should not assume that access rules, collectibles or mission triggers are shared between modes.
