Key takeaways
- Mount Gordo is a broad named region, not only the mountain summit Its recognised scope includes El Gordo Lighthouse and Heart Attacks Beach, with the latter lying below the north-eastern cliffs.
- The ghost appears between 23:00 and 00:00. The most reliable viewing point is the cliff area near the ghost’s apparition, although the nearby campsite also allows players to hear the haunting and observe the ghost from a distance.
- The ghost is Jolene Cranley-Evans, the wife of stuntman Jock Cranley Her death is explained through the environmental story surrounding the lighthouse cliffs.
- There is no normal road to Heart Attacks Beach Reaching it requires descending from the mountain side or approaching by water, and the beach is not a conventional service or settlement area.
- Michael can practise yoga at the mountain top, but Mount Gordo is not itself a general-purpose yoga business or permanently staffed activity venue.
- GTA Online changes the campsite The former campsite is replaced by the purchasable Mount Gordo Facility introduced with The Doomsday Heist, so Story Mode and Online should not be treated as having identical versions of the location.
About this guide
Scope: Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode, with clearly labelled notes for Grand Theft Auto Online where the two versions differ. Status: Research-based guide. The game does not provide a precise surveyed boundary for Mount Gordo, so the boundaries below follow the in-game area naming, the official map’s named features and established location references rather than an invented polygon.
Overview
Mount Gordo is a remote mountain region in north-eastern Blaine County. It is the smallest of the three principal named mountains in San Andreas, alongside Mount Chiliad and Mount Josiah, but it is arguably the most distinctive because of its lighthouse coast, hidden beach, small inland water features and the ghost of Jolene Cranley-Evans.
The area is deliberately quiet. Unlike Mount Chiliad, it has no cable car, summit station or major story set-piece. Most of its value comes from exploration: reaching the mountain paths, viewing the El Gordo Lighthouse, finding the haunted campsite and returning late at night to witness the ghost. Mount Gordo also provides one of Michael’s two yoga locations in Story Mode.
Boundaries and hierarchy
Mount Gordo occupies the north-eastern corner of Blaine County. It should not be reduced to the upper slopes around the ghost. Location references consistently place the following features within the wider Mount Gordo area:
The wider surroundings include the coast to the east, the Grapeseed and Braddock Pass approaches to the south-west and the San Chianski Mountain Range further south. Cape Catfish is a nearby named coastal area, but it should be treated as a separate place rather than silently folded into Mount Gordo. Likewise, Procopio Beach and Paleto Bay are neighbouring northern coastal areas, not automatic subareas of Mount Gordo. The in-game area hierarchy lists Mount Gordo with El Gordo Lighthouse and Heart Attacks Beach as its associated named subareas.
Nearby places that should remain separate
The exact natural boundary between the mountain’s lower slopes, the coast and adjacent rural zones is not marked by a continuous wall, road sign or official coordinate list. Where the game’s HUD, map labels and location references disagree in granularity, the named subareas above are the safest practical division.

Geography and landscape
Mount Gordo is a compact but varied mountain environment. Its upper slopes are covered by scrub, exposed rock and narrow paths. The terrain is less developed than Mount Chiliad and lacks a large built-up settlement. This makes it useful for off-road exploration, scenic driving and wildlife spotting rather than shopping, property management or mission preparation.
---
The mountain has several different visual layers
- 01Upper mountain and summit paths These are the steepest areas and include the main yoga location and the ghost site.
Geography and landscape: steps
- 01Western and southern foothills These connect more naturally with the road network and rural Blaine County. Dirt tracks and rough slopes are more practical here than at the cliffs.
Geography and landscape: steps
- 01Eastern cliff coast The land falls sharply towards the Pacific Ocean. El Gordo Lighthouse is the dominant built landmark, while the cliffs around it form the setting for Jolene Cranley-Evans’s death.
Geography and landscape: steps
- 01Heart Attacks Beach This small beach lies below the north-eastern cliffs. It is isolated and has no ordinary road access, which is why it is more useful as an exploration destination than as a transport point.
Geography and landscape: steps
- 01Small inland water features A small lake and a pond are present on or around the mountain. They are easy to miss when travelling directly between the road and lighthouse, but they help distinguish Mount Gordo from the more barren mountains elsewhere in Blaine County.
Roads, routes and access
El Gordo Drive
El Gordo Drive is the key access road for the eastern side of the mountain. It runs through the foothills and provides the practical approach to the campsite and lighthouse area. It is the route to use when travelling by car from Grapeseed or the northern Blaine County roads.
Although the road reaches the lighthouse district, it does not turn Mount Gordo into a developed coastal town. Most of the mountain remains accessible only by foot, dirt track, motorcycle or off-road vehicle.
Mountain tracks
The upper trails are not formal hiking paths in the sense of a marked national park. They are a mixture of dirt roads, rough tracks and climbable slopes. Motorcycles and light off-road vehicles are generally more useful than heavy cars. A helicopter is the easiest way to reach the summit quickly, but arriving on foot gives a better chance to notice the campsite, trails, small water features and cliff scenery.
Heart Attacks Beach access
Heart Attacks Beach has no normal land road. Approaches include:
The descent is hazardous because the cliffs are steep and the player can easily lose health or destroy a vehicle. It is best treated as a destination for exploration rather than as a shortcut between the lighthouse and the mountain.
Suggested exploration route
---
Suggested exploration route
- 01Start at Grapeseed or the nearest northern rural road.
- 02Follow the road towards El Gordo Drive.
- 03Stop at the Mount Gordo Campsite before continuing uphill.
- 04Explore the upper tracks and locate the yoga area.
- 05Continue towards the eastern cliff line and look down towards the El Gordo Lighthouse.
- 06Visit the lighthouse and surrounding shore.
- 07If you want to inspect Heart Attacks Beach, return with a motorcycle, boat or helicopter rather than attempting a rushed vehicle descent.
- 08For the ghost, arrive before 23:00 and remain near the apparition site until the time window begins.
Landmarks and named sites
El Gordo Lighthouse
El Gordo Lighthouse is the principal architectural landmark of Mount Gordo. It stands on the eastern coast below the mountain and is visible from the surrounding cliffs. The lighthouse is important for three reasons:
The lighthouse itself is not a general shop, safehouse or standard player-owned property in Story Mode. Players should not infer services from its presence. It is primarily a landmark and scenic destination.
In GTA Online, El Gordo Lighthouse can also be used as a location in certain business activities, including supply missions that send players to the area. Those missions are procedural or activity-dependent and do not turn the lighthouse into a permanent service facility.
Mount Gordo Campsite
The campsite is situated on the northern part of El Gordo Drive in the foothills, overlooking the lighthouse. In Story Mode, pedestrians can be found camping there, making it one of the few places in the area with a recognisable civilian presence.
The campsite is also a secondary ghost-viewing location. Between 23:00 and 00:00, players can hear Jolene’s screams and whispers from her final moments, and the ghost can be seen from the campsite. It is a good starting point for players who want the atmosphere without immediately climbing to the apparition’s exact position.
In GTA Online, the original campsite was replaced by the Mount Gordo Facility. This is a major continuity and mode difference. The Online Facility is a purchasable property connected with The Doomsday Heist, whereas the Story Mode campsite is an environmental location and ghost-easter-egg site.
Heart Attacks Beach
Heart Attacks Beach is a small, remote beach embedded in the north-eastern cliffs. Its name is known from the map rather than from substantial in-game signage or dialogue. There is no ordinary road leading to it, and it is not presented as a developed recreational beach with shops, lifeguards or formal facilities.
It should not be confused with Procopio Beach, which is a separate northern coastal location.
---
Residents, visitors and wildlife
Mount Gordo has no substantial permanent settlement and no named residential population. Its ordinary human presence is mainly environmental:
The ghost of Jolene Cranley-Evans is not an ordinary resident or random pedestrian. She is a fixed supernatural encounter tied to a particular place and time.
The mountain can also be dangerous because of wildlife. Mountain lions may appear in remote Blaine County mountain areas, including locations around Mount Gordo. Their appearance is not a guaranteed permanent encounter at one exact point, so players should treat them as wildlife hazards rather than as a named enemy group.
Named characters associated with Mount Gordo
Jock is not a normal Mount Gordo resident encountered at the lighthouse in the same way as Jolene’s apparition. His importance is narrative and investigative rather than physical.

About this guide
Major spoiler
The Mount Gordo ghost
The Mount Gordo ghost is one of GTA V’s best-known supernatural easter eggs. The apparition is Jolene Cranley-Evans, who died after being pushed from a cliff by her husband, Jock Cranley. The police treated the death as an accident, allowing Jock to escape prosecution.
The backstory is presented through the location’s atmosphere, the apparition and information associated with the Cranley family. Jolene wanted to remain in Blaine County to care for her parents and continue running the family guest house. Jock wanted to leave and pursue a career as a stuntman. Their marital conflict culminated in the fatal cliff incident.
How to see the ghost
The ghost is a fixed scripted event, not a random drop, random encounter or mission reward. The encounter does not provide a conventional cash payout or unlockable weapon.
---
How to see the ghost
- 01Travel to Mount Gordo at night.
- 02Reach the cliff area associated with the apparition, or position yourself at the campsite for a more distant view.
- 03Wait until the in-game time is between 23:00 and 00:00.
- 04Keep the camera pointed towards the cliff rather than wandering too far away.
- 05Record or photograph the apparition if desired. The ghost disappears when the time window ends or when the player moves too far from the active area.
Activities and progression
Michael’s yoga location
The summit of Mount Gordo is one of the two places where Michael can practise yoga in Story Mode. The other is Michael’s mansion. The mountain yoga activity is therefore a character-specific activity rather than a service available to all protagonists.
If the yoga prompt is not available, check that:
The available evidence supports Mount Gordo as a yoga location, but it does not support treating the mountain as a permanently accessible yoga business or a multiplayer fitness facility.
Story missions
Mount Gordo is comparatively underused by the main Story Mode campaign. It is more important as an exploration and easter-egg location than as a mission hub. The area may be involved in ambient encounters, collectible routes or activities whose exact placement can vary, but players should not expect a long chain of dedicated Mount Gordo missions.
GTA Online activities
GTA Online uses Mount Gordo and El Gordo Lighthouse for activity-specific content. Examples include:
These are not equivalent to Story Mode content. A player may visit the same landscape but encounter a different property, different NPCs, different mission triggers and different item systems.
---
Collectibles and items
Mount Gordo is not chiefly a fixed collectible hub. Some items associated with its coastline occur in systems with rotating, randomised or activity-specific placement. This distinction matters because a player should not assume that every online cache or supply crate exists permanently in Story Mode.
Practical checklist
Do not count a rotating Online crate as a permanent Story Mode collectible unless the specific item has been independently confirmed for that mode.
---
Verified item-related locations and activities
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Heart Attacks Beach | listed as a location for activity-related crates and coastal exploration. |
| Mount Gordo coastline | used by certain hidden-cache or rotating collection systems in GTA Online. |
| El Gordo Lighthouse | used as a destination in selected Online supply missions. |
| Offshore wrecks | the wider north-eastern coast contains wrecks and underwater locations referenced by cache guides, although not every wreck is strictly inside the Mount Gordo land region. |
Law enforcement and hazards
Mount Gordo has no dedicated police station, military base or permanent security checkpoint. The main hazards are environmental:
The lighthouse and campsite are not high-security facilities. Entering the area does not automatically create a wanted level. However, mission-specific NPCs, hostile activity or stolen vehicles can still produce ordinary law-enforcement consequences.
---
Lore and real-world inspiration
The name “Gordo” is Spanish for “fat” or “large”, a fitting joke for a broad, rounded mountain mass. The mountain’s design forms part of GTA V’s exaggerated version of Southern California’s rural and coastal geography.
The lighthouse resembles the Point Fermin Lighthouse in San Pedro, Los Angeles, although the in-game site is not a literal one-to-one recreation. The comparison is best treated as an inspiration reference rather than an in-game fact. El Gordo Lighthouse’s strongest identity comes from the fictional Jolene Cranley-Evans story and its placement beneath the mountain cliffs.
---
Story Mode and GTA Online comparison
The most important difference is the campsite. Guides written for Story Mode can become misleading if they describe the old campsite as though it remains unchanged in every Online version.
