Key takeaways
- North Los Santos is a broad regional grouping, not one in-game neighbourhood Treat Vinewood, Rockford Hills, Richman, Pacific Bluffs and the other component areas as distinct places.
- Rockford Hills and Burton are commercially dense, with luxury shops, Los Santos Customs, Mount Zonah Medical Center, Rockford Hills City Hall and several mission locations.
- Vinewood and Vinewood Hills form the entertainment and hillside core, including Vinewood Boulevard, the Vinewood Sign, Galileo Observatory, Vinewood Bowl and Lake Vinewood.
- Richman, Morningwood and Pacific Bluffs are mainly residential or recreational, with fewer ordinary services but important estates, golf, coastal roads and scenic landmarks.
- Chumash is geographically separate from the city proper, despite being included in some broad North Los Santos map groupings. It is a coastal settlement in Los Santos County, best reached by Great Ocean Highway.
- The region is generally safer and wealthier than South or East Los Santos, but it still contains mission combat, vehicle theft, random encounters, gang activity, police responses and restricted or mission-only interiors.
About this guide
Scope note: “North Los Santos” is a useful fan and guide-booking term, not a single official administrative district named by Rockstar. Sources group the northern part of the city differently. This guide uses the broad urban-and-coastal definition: Vinewood, Vinewood Hills, Rockford Hills and Burton, Richman, Morningwood, Pacific Bluffs, Backlot City, and Chumash. It does not fold Downtown Los Santos, West Los Santos, Blaine County, or the rural Tongva and Great Chaparral areas into North Los Santos, although several routes from North Los Santos lead directly into them.
Overview
Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online
North Los Santos is the wealthiest and most visibly polished part of Los Santos. It stretches from the entertainment district around Vinewood Boulevard and the high-rise shopping streets of Rockford Hills to the expensive estates of Richman and Vinewood Hills, then west along the coast through Pacific Bluffs and Chumash. The region combines tourist attractions, film studios, celebrity homes, luxury retail, golf, hillside roads and some of the most useful story locations in the game.
It is also one of the most important areas in Story Mode. Michael De Santa’s family home is in Rockford Hills, Franklin frequently works in and around the district, several Strangers and Freaks encounters occur on the northern roads, and many assassination, property and random-event locations are close together. In GTA Online, the same geography remains, but additional businesses, properties, activities and mission locations change the practical importance of particular buildings.
Regional geography and boundaries
North Los Santos occupies the northern and north-western portion of the Los Santos urban map. Its southern edge is broadly formed by Downtown Los Santos, Little Seoul, Del Perro and the major freeways. The eastern edge reaches the Tataviam Mountains and the Los Santos River around East Vinewood, while the western side follows the coast towards Chumash.
This boundary is not perfectly consistent because the game uses overlapping district labels, GPS zones and informal regional groupings. For example, Burton is treated as part of Rockford Hills in some descriptions, but its GPS and the official digital manual map have also caused it to be associated with Vinewood. Chumash is a town outside the Los Santos city grid, but broad map guides place it within North Los Santos because it is the northern coastal extension of the Los Santos region.
Do not confuse North Los Santos with Blaine County, which begins farther north and includes places such as Sandy Shores, Paleto Bay and the Grand Senora Desert. North Yankton is also unrelated. It is the out-of-state setting of the prologue and the Ludendorff missions, not a northern district of Los Santos.

The practical division is
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Urban north | Vinewood, Burton, Rockford Hills and the southern edge of Vinewood Hills. |
| Hills and estates | Vinewood Hills and Richman. |
| Western residential and cultural districts | Morningwood, Pacific Bluffs and Backlot City. |
| Northern coastal extension | Chumash and the surrounding Great Ocean Highway approaches. |
Vinewood
Vinewood is the entertainment and tourist centre of the region. It is bordered by Vinewood Hills to the north, Rockford Hills to the west, Downtown Los Santos to the south and the Tataviam Mountains to the east. The area contains the city’s most recognisable entertainment streets, hotels, theatres, clubs and tourist-facing businesses.
Vinewood Boulevard is the main pedestrian and traffic corridor. It contains street performers, souvenir shops, cinemas, nightlife venues, hotels and a steady stream of tourists. The surrounding roads climb towards Vinewood Hills and connect to East Vinewood, West Vinewood, Hawick and Alta.
Named places in Vinewood
Some of these are functioning interiors or activities, while others are decorative or mission-related. The presence of a branded storefront does not necessarily mean that the player can enter it or buy anything there.
Named places in Vinewood
Vinewood Hills
Vinewood Hills rises north of Vinewood and Rockford Hills. It is an affluent residential district of winding roads, large houses, steep drives, overlooks and hillside estates. The Vinewood Sign is its most famous landmark, while Galileo Observatory provides one of the clearest views over Los Santos.
The district is useful for scenic driving, helicopter approaches, parachuting and several collectible routes. It is also a good transition point between the dense city and the open roads leading towards the Tataviam Mountains and Blaine County.
Named places in Vinewood Hills
The observatory, park and bowl are not equivalent types of location. Galileo Observatory is a major public landmark and mission setting, Vinewood Bowl is an entertainment venue, and many of the surrounding named estates are primarily scenery or residential areas.

Rockford Hills and Burton
Rockford Hills is an incorporated affluent city within Los Santos County rather than merely a generic wealthy neighbourhood. It contains a commercial southern half and a residential northern half. Portola Drive and Rockford Plaza are the principal shopping areas, while the northern streets contain mansions, private drives and Michael’s home.
Rockford Hills City Hall stands near Mount Zonah Medical Center. A fire station and police station are also located in the district. This makes Rockford Hills one of the most practical parts of North Los Santos for medical, police and vehicle-related navigation.
Burton lies in the south-eastern part of Rockford Hills. It is a compact shopping district with clothing outlets, vehicle services and several roads linking Vinewood, Alta, Hawick and Downtown. It is best treated as a distinct subarea for navigation even when grouped administratively with Rockford Hills.
Named places in Rockford Hills and Burton
Rockford Plaza and Portola Drive are the principal luxury-shopping destinations. The Epsilon Center is important for the Epsilon Program storyline, while the De Santa Residence is a central Story Mode home and mission location. Mount Zonah functions as a medical facility in the game world, but not every visible medical building offers a full hospital interior.

Richman
Richman is one of Los Santos’s most exclusive residential areas. It is mainly made up of large houses, private roads and landscaped grounds, with comparatively few ordinary shops. The Los Santos Golf Club is the district’s defining recreational facility. Richman is bordered by Vinewood Hills, Rockford Hills, Morningwood and Pacific Bluffs.
The district is best explored by car during daylight, on foot around the golf-course approaches, or from the air. Its broad roads and high-value vehicles make it a useful area for observing traffic patterns, but it is less rewarding for shopping than Rockford Hills or Vinewood.
Named places in Richman
The golf club is both a landmark and an activity location. The surrounding mansions are mostly scenery, though some are involved in random events, collectibles or mission staging.
Named places in Richman
Morningwood
Morningwood is a prosperous western district between Richman, Rockford Hills, Pacific Bluffs and Del Perro. It is less visually theatrical than Vinewood and less commercially concentrated than Rockford Hills, but it provides a useful route to the coast and several residential and hotel locations.
Named places in Morningwood
Not every named business is a full service location. Fleeca Bank branches are generally scenery or mission props rather than conventional banking interfaces in Story Mode.
Named places in Morningwood
Pacific Bluffs
Pacific Bluffs is a wealthy coastal district west of Morningwood and Richman. It is centred on scenic roads, large residences, beachside views and the Kortz Center. Its roads are useful for reaching the northern coast without passing through the densest Vinewood traffic.
Named places in Pacific Bluffs
The Kortz Center is a major public landmark and a frequent mission setting. Its grounds are accessible in the open world, but the district’s private residences are generally decorative.
Named places in Pacific Bluffs
Backlot City
Backlot City is the film-studio district west of Rockford Hills and north of Del Perro. It is closely associated with Richards Majestic Productions and the Los Santos film industry. The area is less a conventional neighbourhood than a studio and production campus surrounded by roads, warehouses, gates and film-world scenery.
Named places in Backlot City
Backlot City is especially relevant to Michael’s later story missions and Solomon Richards’ missions. Several studio areas are accessible only during particular missions or through restricted entrances.
Chumash
Chumash is a coastal town in Los Santos County, north-west of the urban districts. It is not part of the Los Santos municipal grid in the same way as Rockford Hills or Vinewood, but broad regional guides commonly include it in North Los Santos because it is the first major coastal settlement north of the city.
Great Ocean Highway runs through the town. Chumash has a more open, roadside character than the city districts, with service stations, banks, liquor stores and coastal houses. It is also a convenient stopping point when travelling between Los Santos and the northern county.
Named places in Chumash
Hookies is a recognisable coastal business and a mission-related location. The supermarkets, petrol stations and liquor stores are usable in the normal ways where the relevant interior is available. Bank buildings are usually decorative or mission scenery rather than player-operated banking facilities.

Main road approaches
North Los Santos is easiest to navigate by learning its major east-west and north-south corridors.
Main road approaches: steps
- 01Del Perro Freeway: The southern urban approach from Downtown, Little Seoul and Del Perro.
- 02Vinewood Boulevard: The main entertainment corridor through Vinewood.
- 03Eclipse Boulevard: Connects West Vinewood, Backlot City, Morningwood and the western districts.
- 04Rockford Drive: A major route through Rockford Hills and towards Vinewood Hills.
- 05Portola Drive: The luxury-shopping route through southern Rockford Hills.
- 06North Rockford Drive: Runs through the wealthy northern districts and towards Richman and Pacific Bluffs.
- 07West Eclipse Boulevard: Connects Backlot City with the western side of Vinewood and Morningwood.
- 08Great Ocean Highway: The principal coastal route towards Chumash and Blaine County.
- 09Banham Canyon Drive: A scenic route from Pacific Bluffs and Chumash towards Banham Canyon and the western county.
- 10Mad Wayne Thunder Drive: A winding residential road through Vinewood Hills.
Practical navigation
The hills can make apparently close locations slow to reach. A straight line from Rockford Hills to Vinewood Hills may involve steep roads, switchbacks and blocked private drives, so use the marked roads rather than cutting directly through estates.

Residents and story-linked characters
Michael De Santa
Michael lives with his family in the De Santa Residence in Rockford Hills. The house is one of the most important fixed locations in Story Mode and acts as a save, wardrobe and mission base for Michael. It is also the setting for family scenes and several missions.
Franklin Clinton
Franklin begins the game in South Los Santos but becomes closely associated with North Los Santos through his work for Simeon Yetarian, his relationship with Michael and missions around Rockford Hills, Vinewood and the western city. Franklin’s access to wealthy districts is initially professional rather than social, which is central to the game’s contrast between the city’s economic classes.
Solomon Richards
Solomon is associated with Richards Majestic Productions in Backlot City. His missions expose the film industry’s vanity, exploitation and internal disputes. The studio is one of the clearest examples of North Los Santos functioning as a satire of celebrity culture rather than merely a wealthy backdrop.
Epsilon representatives
The Epsilon Program’s centre in Rockford Hills is associated with Michael’s Epsilon missions. The organisation’s members, clothing, vehicles and scripted encounters are linked to the district, though the programme’s broader activities can send Michael elsewhere.
Other residents and visitors
North Los Santos contains many celebrity-style pedestrians, wealthy tourists, actors, models, business people, security staff, studio workers and luxury-car drivers. Most are ordinary ambient NPCs rather than individually named residents. The game does not provide a verified named resident list for every mansion, so visible occupancy should not be treated as proof of a canonical character’s home.
Factions and security
North Los Santos has no dominant street gang territory in the way Chamberlain Hills, Rancho or East Los Santos do. Its main social forces are:
Police response is still normal. Stealing a vehicle, trespassing, firing weapons or causing a public disturbance can produce wanted levels even in affluent areas. The police station in Rockford Hills is a useful landmark, but it is not a safe zone.
---
Vinewood Sign
The Vinewood Sign is the region’s most recognisable landmark and a visual reference point for the entire northern city. It stands high in Vinewood Hills and can be seen from Vinewood Boulevard, Rockford Hills and many southern districts.
The sign is not simply a decorative object. It is used as a navigation aid, a photography point, a scenic destination and a setting for missions and encounters. Reaching it by road requires climbing the hillside routes; approaching directly across steep ground can result in falls or awkward vehicle positioning.
Galileo Observatory
Galileo Observatory sits in Vinewood Hills and resembles the Griffith Observatory. It is a public landmark with a broad view over Los Santos. The grounds are useful for sightseeing, parachute approaches and story-related activity.
Vinewood Bowl and Sisyphus Theater
These venues represent the city’s outdoor entertainment culture. They are useful visual landmarks on the hills and appear in mission or activity contexts. Their presence also reinforces the difference between Vinewood’s tourist-facing entertainment and the private wealth of Richman and the northern Rockford Hills estates.
Rockford Plaza and Portola Drive
Rockford Plaza is the main shopping-centre landmark in Rockford Hills. Portola Drive contains luxury retail and is one of the best places to find high-end clothing and jewellery businesses.
The district is particularly useful when a mission or challenge calls for access to upscale clothing. The presence of a branded fashion shop does not always mean that every display or department is interactive, so use the game’s shop markers rather than assuming every storefront has services.
Richards Majestic
The studio campus in Backlot City is a major Story Mode location. It combines offices, sound stages, production areas and film-set scenery. The studio is most important during Solomon’s missions, but it remains a useful exploration area after those missions because the surrounding buildings and gates form some of the region’s most distinctive urban scenery.
Los Santos Golf Club
The golf club in Richman provides the main golf activity in the city. It is both a recreational facility and a status symbol for North Los Santos’s wealthy population. The activity is separate from the surrounding decorative mansions and is one of the region’s clearest examples of a fully functioning leisure location.
---
Functional services
The following services are available in or around the broad North Los Santos area, with availability depending on Story Mode, GTA Online and the specific branch:
Vehicle customisation
The Burton Los Santos Customs is particularly convenient when travelling between Vinewood, Rockford Hills and Downtown. It provides normal vehicle-modification services where the branch is available. In Story Mode, vehicle storage and personal-car rules differ from GTA Online, so do not assume that an upgraded vehicle is permanently safe merely because it has been modified.
Clothing
North Los Santos is the best broad region for luxury clothing, but shops are still governed by character, mission and mode restrictions.
Food and drink
Restaurants and bars such as Tequi-la-la, Hookies and other branded venues provide atmosphere and, in some cases, activity or mission functions. Decorative storefronts should not be confused with guaranteed purchasable food services.
---
Clothing
| Name | Details |
|---|---|
| Ponsonbys | Luxury clothing and formal wear. |
| Sub Urban | Casual urban clothing. |
| Binco | Lower-cost clothing. |
| Discount Store | Budget clothing and basic outfits. |
Early story progression
North Los Santos first becomes important through Franklin’s work for Simeon. Complications takes Franklin to a Rockford Hills mansion to repossess Jimmy De Santa’s vehicle. The mission introduces the contrast between Franklin’s working-class background and the privileged world of Michael’s family.
After the mission, Michael’s relationship with Franklin makes Rockford Hills a recurring Story Mode base. Michael’s house becomes available as his home, and Franklin begins travelling regularly through North Los Santos.
Michael’s household missions
Michael’s Rockford Hills home is used for several domestic and story missions, including family scenes and the events surrounding Did Somebody Say Yoga? The house is one of the region’s most important progression locations because it combines a fixed interior, character switching, wardrobe access and mission triggers.
Richards Majestic missions
The film-studio missions associated with Solomon Richards take place in Backlot City and expose the absurdity of Los Santos’s entertainment industry. They are among the best missions for learning the studio district’s layout.
The studio can contain mission-only access areas, so the fact that a door or sound stage is visible does not prove that it remains enterable during free roam.
Epsilon missions
Michael’s Epsilon storyline begins with internet or mission triggers and eventually brings him to the Epsilon Center in Rockford Hills. The programme uses the district’s wealth and spiritual consumerism as part of its satire.
Spoiler warning: Epsilon missions can affect Michael’s money and produce branching outcomes depending on the player’s choices. Do not treat the Epsilon Center as an ordinary religious building or a conventional service location.
Activities
---
Collectibles are distributed throughout the region rather than concentrated in one single hunt area. Verified examples associated with North Los Santos include:
A useful example is the Rockford Hills area, where documented pickups include health items at Michael’s mansion, Mount Zonah Medical Center and a location near Weazel Dorset, as well as spaceship-part placements.
Because collectibles can be mode-specific or progression-dependent, a failed search does not prove that an item is absent. Some items appear only after the relevant Stranger mission, some are tied to a particular character, and GTA Online adds or removes collectible sets through updates.

Steep terrain
Vinewood Hills roads are narrow, steep and sometimes poorly suited to fast cars. Motorcycles and sports cars can lose control on blind bends, while heavy vehicles may struggle on steep driveways.
Private property
Many North Los Santos residences look enterable but are not. Trespassing around mansion gates can trigger police attention, and some properties become accessible only during a mission.
Police and random crimes
Affluence does not prevent crime. Random robberies, vehicle thefts, fleeing criminals and occasional gang or biker activity can occur. These encounters are not proof that the area belongs to a permanent faction.
Mission-only changes
Several buildings and compounds have expanded interiors or open gates during missions. After the mission, the same place may become inaccessible or revert to a decorative exterior. This applies particularly to:
Hidden viewpoints
The region has some of the game’s best viewpoints:
These are scenic locations rather than guaranteed reward sites. Do not expect every viewpoint to contain a collectible, weapon or mission trigger.
---
GTA Online uses the same physical region but changes its function.
The underlying district names and major landmarks remain broadly consistent, but mission access, interiors, property ownership and activities are mode-specific.

The following consolidated directory collects the named entries relevant to the adopted broad scope. It separates districts from landmarks and recognises that some entries are decorative, mission-only or ambiguous in administrative classification.

---
North Los Santos is a satirical reconstruction of Southern California. Vinewood draws heavily on Hollywood, Rockford Hills on Beverly Hills, Richman on Bel Air and Holmby Hills, Pacific Bluffs on the Pacific Palisades area, Chumash on the Malibu coast, and Galileo Observatory on the Griffith Observatory. The in-game names are fictional and should be kept separate from their real-world inspirations.
Los Santos itself is the HD Universe’s recurring version of Los Angeles. Earlier games used different layouts and district structures, so places such as Vinewood should not be assumed to have identical boundaries or landmarks across continuities. GTA V’s North Los Santos is specifically the 2013 HD Universe version.
---
Is North Los Santos an official district?
No. It is a broad regional label used by guides and fans. Individual places such as Rockford Hills, Vinewood and Richman have their own identities and boundaries.
Does North Los Santos include Chumash?
It depends on the guide. This article includes Chumash as the region’s northern coastal extension, while keeping it separate from the Los Santos urban districts. Some narrower definitions stop around Pacific Bluffs or Backlot City.
Is Burton part of Rockford Hills or Vinewood?
Both classifications appear in reference material. Burton is commonly described as part of south-eastern Rockford Hills, but GPS and map conventions have also associated it with Vinewood. For navigation, treating Burton as its own subarea is the least confusing approach.
Is North Los Santos safer than South Los Santos?
Generally, it has fewer permanent gang territories and a wealthier civilian population, but it is not crime-free. Police, random encounters, mission combat and vehicle theft can still occur.
Can every mansion be entered?
No. Most are scenery. Some become accessible during missions, and others contain collectible or random-event locations without offering a normal free-roam interior.
What is the best place to begin exploring?
Start at Michael’s De Santa Residence, travel through Rockford Hills and Portola Drive, continue along Vinewood Boulevard, then climb to the Vinewood Sign and Galileo Observatory. This route demonstrates the region’s main contrasts: wealthy residential streets, luxury retail, entertainment districts and hillside scenery.
